About

Tony Hawk's Proving Ground for Nintendo DS is a skateboarding game published by Activision in October 2007. It is the handheld edition of the ninth main Tony Hawk release, but it was developed by Vicarious Visions rather than by Neversoft, the studio behind the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions. Built for the dual-screen Nintendo DS, it brings the series' combination of street skating, trick chaining, goals and player customization to a portable format. The game was released in North America on October 16, 2007, with an E10+ rating in that market.

At its core, Proving Ground asks players to keep a skater moving through urban spaces while linking jumps, grinds, manuals and aerial tricks into high-scoring combinations. Directional controls handle movement and positioning, while the handheld's stylus is worked into trick performance alongside the D-pad. That control approach gives the DS version its own identity: play alternates between finding useful terrain, maintaining speed and using the system's touch input to help turn a line through ramps, rails, ledges and other skateable surfaces into a longer sequence. A failed landing ends a combo, so timing and balance matter as much as selecting a flashy move.

The single-player material follows the installment's career-oriented framework while giving players room to define a skater of their own. A create-a-skater feature lets the player begin with a personalized character, and the game also includes a skate-park creation tool. Those options sit naturally beside the series' longstanding emphasis on making a personal route through its objectives: players can pursue challenges, improve their performance and seek out score opportunities rather than simply race through a fixed set of events. Familiar professional skaters also supply challenges, tying the portable game to the licensed personality of the wider Tony Hawk series.

Proving Ground also looks back to the design of the earlier Pro Skater games through its Classic mode. This mode presents trick-focused goals and achievements in a more traditional arcade-style format, making short sessions of score chasing and challenge completion a central part of the Nintendo DS experience. Free Skate is available as well, providing a less structured way to explore and practice lines. Together, these modes balance the game’s progression systems with the immediate appeal that defined the franchise: learn a space, spot a route between obstacles and then try to execute it cleanly enough to turn a promising run into a major combo.

Multiplayer was another significant part of the DS release. Local wireless play supports two to four participants, while Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection functionality enabled online head-to-head sessions when the service was active. The game offers up to ten multiplayer types, including endurance races and challenge-based contests. One of its more unusual variations is Red Light/Green Light, where trick points count only during the green-light phase, changing the usual incentive to score whenever possible. That rule turns observation and restraint into part of a skateboarding match, rather than treating every successful trick as automatically valuable.

As a Nintendo DS entry, Tony Hawk's Proving Ground belongs to a period when Activision and Vicarious Visions regularly adapted the Tony Hawk formula for handheld hardware. It shares the 2007 Proving Ground name and broad progression concept with the home-console versions, yet its touch-screen controls, portable modes and DS-specific multiplayer setup make it more than a direct copy of them. For players exploring the Tony Hawk catalogue on Nintendo hardware, it represents a late-series attempt to preserve the rhythm of building tricks, meeting goals and customizing a skater while reshaping the format around the DS's controls and social features.
