About

Thor: God of Thunder for Nintendo DS is a 2011 single-player action game from WayForward Technologies, published by Sega alongside Marvel Studios' Thor. This handheld version is not a retelling of the film. Instead, it tells an original adventure set before the movie, sending Thor into a crisis that begins with an attack on Asgard. Presented as a 2D side-scrolling brawler, it gives the God of Thunder a distinctly sprite-based Nintendo DS outing built around Mjolnir, storm powers, and the mythology surrounding the Nine Realms.

The campaign follows Thor as he answers the threat to his home and pursues the forces behind it. Loki guides part of the journey, while Thor's route leads beyond Asgard into the fantastical realms of Norse mythology. The story unfolds through comic-book-style portrait scenes, with artwork tied to the film's costume and character designs rather than actor likenesses. Familiar Marvel and mythological adversaries appear along the way, including the frost giant Ymir, placing the battle within a broader Asgardian conflict rather than simply replaying the film's plot.

Combat is the center of Thor: God of Thunder on DS. Thor uses close-range hammer strikes to clear groups of foes, but the action offers more than repeating a single attack. Players can throw Mjolnir, grab opponents, launch them into the air, and continue attacks while moving between the handheld's two screens. Stringing attacks together and keeping enemies airborne increases the scope for combos, while Thor's thunder-themed abilities add options against opponents at a distance. The result is a side-view beat 'em up that emphasizes timing, positioning, and finding ways to extend a fight rather than only advancing through each level.

WayForward designed the stages around the Nintendo DS hardware instead of treating the second screen as a separate map or a touch-control gimmick. The two displays form one tall, scrolling playfield, allowing Thor to climb and leap through vertical sections as well as move horizontally. This layout becomes especially important in the large boss sequences: some enemies occupy both screens, turning their size and attack patterns into part of the encounter. A battle with Ymir, for example, combines avoiding incoming hazards, fighting lesser enemies, and reaching the giant himself.

The adventure is arranged as seven chapters with three acts apiece. Between the fighting sequences, players can search the linear environments for runes. These collectible upgrades can be equipped to enhance areas such as Thor's melee attacks, throws, and powers; up to three runes can be active at once. That system gives the campaign a modest layer of customization and offers a reason to look beyond the direct route through a stage. Boss battles cap the acts and provide the main changes of pace as Thor moves from one realm and confrontation to the next.

Visually, this Nintendo DS release favors detailed 2D character animation and painted-looking backgrounds over the 3D approach used by several other versions of Thor: God of Thunder. Its side-scrolling structure, dual-screen levels, and game-specific narrative also distinguish it from the Wii, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 releases, which were developed separately. The DS game was created specifically by WayForward, with creative director Matt Bozon, director Austin Ivansmith, and composer Jake Kaufman among its credited team.

Released in North America on May 3, 2011, Thor: God of Thunder for Nintendo DS arrived during a period when Sega was producing Marvel movie tie-in games for several platforms. For DS players, it stands as a compact, dedicated handheld interpretation: an original Asgard adventure with a vertical two-screen presentation, a hammer-focused combat system, rune-based upgrades, and boss fights designed to make the most of the system's unusual display layout.
