About

The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest for Nintendo DS is a 2010 action role-playing game developed by TT Fusion and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Released in North America on September 14, 2010, it adapts key events from Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy through the exploits of Aragorn, the Ranger also known as Strider. Although it shares a title and broad premise with versions for Wii and PlayStation 3, the Nintendo DS release is its own handheld-focused game, built around isometric action, character growth, and a campaign for one player.

The adventure is framed as Samwise Gamgee recounts Aragorn's role in the War of the Ring to his children. That setup lets the story travel from the Fellowship's early journey through the climactic struggle against Sauron, placing Aragorn at the center of familiar Middle-earth locations and battles. The Shire material serves the storytelling rather than a playable hub here, which is one of the clearest differences from the console editions. Its focus stays on Aragorn's quest across a sequence of chapters and missions.

Viewed from a diagonal, overhead angle, Aragorn's Quest has the player guide Aragorn through combat encounters and objectives while exploring its fantasy environments. His basic tools are swordplay and archery: players can block, use faster or heavier sword strikes, and fire arrows, including charged shots for greater force. Encounters draw on the film setting's threats, with Aragorn facing creatures and enemy forces from Middle-earth as the campaign moves through its retelling of the trilogy.

The DS version adds role-playing systems to the action. Victories and completed tasks award experience, and leveling up improves Aragorn's capabilities while providing points for special techniques that become available over the course of the game. A morale resource is tied to certain special moves, so these abilities are part of managing a fight rather than simply being used without limit. Equipment such as weapons and belts can also be fitted to strengthen Aragorn, giving the portable game a more stat-driven structure than its Wii and PlayStation 3 counterparts.

Progress is organized around the main story chapters, with opportunities to improve the character between and during its battles. The Nintendo DS controls translate sword attacks, defense, bow use, and menu-based character development to the system's portable format. This edition does not include the drop-in cooperative play found on Wii and PlayStation 3, where a second player can join as Gandalf. Instead, it includes an Arena mode alongside the single-player adventure, offering a separate place to face combat challenges.

Aragorn's Quest arrived during Warner Bros.' first wave of games based on the New Line Cinema Lord of the Rings films after the company acquired the game rights. TT Fusion handled the Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable editions, while the Wii version was developed separately by Headstrong Games. That split helps explain why the DS game is not a scaled-down motion-control adventure: it is a compact action-RPG interpretation with experience, equipment, and a different selection of play modes. The game was also released in several European territories under localized titles, while retaining its journey through the film trilogy's Middle-earth.

For players looking for a Lord of the Rings game designed around Aragorn rather than the entire Fellowship, The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest on Nintendo DS offers a handheld campaign that combines licensed fantasy storytelling with progression-based combat. Its blend of close-range attacks, ranged bow shots, unlockable skills, and equipment upgrades makes it distinct within the game's multi-platform family. The result is a standalone DS take on Aragorn's path from the early Fellowship journey to the war that decides the fate of Middle-earth.
