About
Kirby & the Amazing Mirror for Game Boy Advance is a 2004 action-platform game from Nintendo, developed through a collaboration among HAL Laboratory, Flagship, and Dimps. It takes Kirby away from the usual straight-ahead march of short stages and into the Mirror World, an interconnected realm of doors, warp routes, hidden rooms, and branching paths. The North American release arrived on October 18, 2004, after the Japanese launch that spring, and it remains a distinctive Game Boy Advance chapter in the Kirby series.
The adventure begins when Dark Meta Knight divides Kirby into four differently colored Kirbys and leads the pursuit into the Mirror World. Meta Knight has been trapped and the Dimension Mirror broken into eight pieces, so the quest is to search the realm, recover its fragments from major bosses, and open the way to the confrontation at the mirror. This setup gives the journey a clear destination while leaving much of the route between objectives open for exploration.
Kirby's familiar fundamentals are intact. He can run, jump, float through the air, inhale enemies and, in many cases, copy their attacks. Copy Abilities are useful not only in combat but also for reaching secrets and solving the environmental obstacles spread across the world. A pause-screen map helps track explored rooms, while collectible maps reveal more of each area. Treasures can also provide health and other useful upgrades, turning detours into part of the game’s progression rather than mere decoration.
What most separates Kirby & the Amazing Mirror GBA from many earlier Kirby games is its collaborative design. In single-player play, the other three Kirbys are computer-controlled companions who can be summoned with the in-game Cell Phone when extra help is needed. With Game Boy Advance systems and the appropriate link setup, up to four people can explore the same campaign together, each controlling a different-colored Kirby. Players can split up to search different routes, regroup for bosses, share the effects of items, and race to uncover hidden treasure rooms.
The four-player idea also reaches the bonus menu. Speed Eaters, Crackity Hack, and Kirby’s Wave Ride offer compact competitive diversions for one or more players, while the main game includes extra items such as music-related collectibles and spray paints that change Kirby’s appearance. The campaign’s nonlinear structure and movement-based Copy Abilities make it especially rewarding to revisit routes after acquiring a more suitable power or a newly discovered map.
The Game Boy Advance original was later made available in a limited Nintendo 3DS Ambassador release and on Wii U Virtual Console. It also joined the Game Boy Advance library in the Nintendo Classics service in 2023, where its multiplayer concept could be experienced with online support. Those later versions do not change the identity of the original: Kirby & the Amazing Mirror is a portable Kirby adventure built around exploration, Copy Abilities, and the unusual sight of four Kirbys navigating one large mirrored world.
