About
Shin Megami Tensei II for Game Boy Advance is Atlus’s post-apocalyptic role-playing game, released in Japan on September 26, 2003. This cartridge edition brings the second numbered Shin Megami Tensei adventure to Nintendo’s handheld, revisiting the game first published for Super Famicom in 1994. It remains a Japan-only release, presented in Japanese, and continues the story after the first Shin Megami Tensei while building a self-contained journey through a harsh, religiously controlled future Tokyo.
The story begins in Tokyo Millennium, an enclosed city raised over the remains of Tokyo after disaster has made the outside world perilous. Its rulers, the Messians, promise order and salvation, but life is sharply divided between the privileged Center and the brutal Valhalla district. Players follow the amnesiac gladiator Aleph, who fights in Valhalla’s arena in pursuit of citizenship and soon becomes entangled in the city’s competing claims of messiahship. The search for answers carries Aleph through fortified districts, underground ruins, demon-haunted territory, and confrontations that expose the forces shaping Tokyo Millennium’s future.
Exploration alternates between overhead travel across the world map and first-person dungeon navigation. In labyrinths, the player manages direction, doors, hazards, resources, and random encounters while using Aleph’s COMP computer to check information and call allied demons. Battles are turn-based and party-based: Aleph can attack with weapons, use magic and items, while recruited demons contribute their own attacks, spells, resistances, and support. Positioning party members matters as well, since fighters in the rear are less exposed to enemy attacks but less able to use direct weapons effectively.
Negotiation is as important as combat. Rather than automatically defeating every hostile demon, players can try to talk with one, selecting an attitude and responding to its requests for conversation, money, or items. A successful exchange can persuade that demon to join the party, but its personality, the player’s choices, and the current moon phase all influence the result. Recruited demons can be taken to the Cathedral of Shadows for two- or three-way fusion, turning them into new allies and encouraging careful party planning. The game’s alignment system—Law, Chaos, or Neutral—also develops through key decisions, affecting relationships, story direction, and the ending reached.
The Game Boy Advance version is a portable adaptation of the PlayStation-era release with its own extra material. Its A-MODE DDS features expand the experience beyond the main campaign, including post-clear options such as a music collection and an exchange function. It also includes Visionary items that reveal side-story material; some of those items can be completed by linking with the Game Boy Advance version of the first Shin Megami Tensei. Shin Megami Tensei II on GBA therefore preserves the series’ defining mix of first-person dungeon RPG systems, demon negotiation, fusion, and consequential choices while adding handheld-era bonuses for players exploring this dark chapter of the Megami Tensei lineage.
