About
Madden NFL 2005 for Nintendo DS brought EA Sports' NFL football series to Nintendo's new dual-screen handheld at the system's North American launch in November 2004. Developed for this version by Exient Entertainment and published by EA Sports, it is an American football simulation built around licensed NFL teams, uniforms, and player portraits. Rather than being a straight copy of the home-console release, this edition was designed around the DS hardware, pairing a 3D view of the action with a second-screen tactical display.
The aim in each game is familiar gridiron football: guide an offense downfield for touchdowns or field goals, protect possession, and stop the opposing team from doing the same. On the upper screen, plays unfold in a broadcast-style 3D view with the score situation and play clock close at hand. The lower screen presents a top-down X's-and-O's map of the field at the same time, letting a player follow receiver routes, defensive coverage, and developing space beyond what is visible in the main camera.
Touch controls are central to the Nintendo DS version's approach. The stylus can be used to move through menus and select formations and plays, while the touchscreen also gives pre-snap decisions a more direct interface. Players can call audibles from the lower screen and alter a selected receiver's route without relying entirely on button combinations. Passing can also be directed by tapping a receiver on the touchscreen, though the standard controls remain available for play selection and on-field action.
Once the ball is snapped, Madden NFL 2005 uses the DS buttons for familiar football fundamentals. Ball carriers can accelerate, spin, dive, stiff-arm, and juke left or right, while defenders can switch control, pursue the carrier, dive, and jump for the ball. Kicking is adapted to the touchscreen display through a compact gauge that handles direction and power for kickoffs, punts, and field-goal attempts. The split presentation asks players to decide when to watch the field-level view and when to consult the overhead diagram for a fuller picture of the play.
The game includes quick exhibition-style football alongside season play, practice, a two-minute drill, and situation scenarios. Its Madden Challenge tasks add individual on-field objectives that earn tokens when completed, giving short sessions a defined target beyond a full game. Local wireless head-to-head play allows two Nintendo DS owners to meet on the field, making multiplayer a significant part of this portable edition rather than an extra borrowed from the console releases.
Madden NFL 2005 arrived during the first wave of Nintendo DS software and is the first Madden NFL entry released for the handheld. Its dual-screen play diagram, touchscreen play calling, and wireless competition illustrate how EA Sports and Exient tailored an established annual sports series to a new portable format. For players exploring early Nintendo DS games, it remains a snapshot of how football simulation design was adjusted for the system's stylus controls and two simultaneous displays.
