About

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Trials and Tribulations for Nintendo DS is Capcom's courtroom adventure and the third main entry in the original Ace Attorney trilogy. Released in North America in October 2007 after its earlier Japanese Game Boy Advance debut, this DS edition casts players as defense attorney Phoenix Wright. Across five connected cases, Phoenix must defend clients who appear headed for guilty verdicts, using careful observation and a growing case file to expose what really happened.

Each episode moves between investigations and trials. During investigations, players visit locations, examine scenery, speak with witnesses, and present evidence or character profiles when a lead seems relevant. Information gathered there becomes the foundation for the courtroom, where Phoenix listens to testimony, presses witnesses for more detail, and points out contradictions by presenting the right evidence. Wrong accusations reduce the judge's patience meter, so success depends on reading statements closely as well as following the trail of clues.

Trials and Tribulations retains the Psyche-Lock system introduced in the preceding game. When a witness is concealing something, Phoenix can use Maya Fey's magatama to reveal locks around the hidden topic. Breaking those locks requires presenting the appropriate evidence or profiles, turning conversations into their own logical challenges before the trial can advance. The Nintendo DS presentation uses its two screens for dialogue, menus, evidence, and animated character reactions, keeping the interface focused on the ongoing investigation.

The story centers on Phoenix, his assistant Maya Fey, and their connection to the Fey family, while also returning to Phoenix's late mentor Mia Fey through cases set in the past. Familiar allies and rivals such as Miles Edgeworth, Franziska von Karma, Detective Dick Gumshoe, and Pearl Fey appear alongside a new masked prosecutor, Godot. The cases range from theft and impersonation to murder trials, and their chronology gradually brings together events from Phoenix's student days, Mia's early career, and the present.

Written and directed by Shu Takumi, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Trials and Tribulations completes the three-game story arc that began with Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and continued in Justice for All. Its five episodes unlock in sequence, and the final case briefly lets players see events from another character's perspective. The game combines menu-driven detective work with cross-examination puzzles, using its visual-novel format to make every testimony, profile, and item in the court record potentially important.

Although the game first appeared in Japan as Gyakuten Saiban 3 for Game Boy Advance in 2004, the Nintendo DS version brought the complete third installment to Japanese and North American players in 2007; Europe followed in 2008. Later releases placed the original trilogy on other platforms, but this Nintendo DS version remains the handheld edition built around the series' distinctive investigations, evidence presentations, and dramatic objections. For players following Phoenix Wright's early career, it delivers the conclusion to the trilogy's central storyline.
