About

L the proLogue to DEATH NOTE - Rasen no Wana is a Nintendo DS escape and investigation game from Konami, released in Japan on February 7, 2008. Also known in English as L: The ProLogue to Death Note: Spiraling Trap, it is the third Nintendo DS game based on the Death Note license. The story is set before the Kira investigation of the original series and places the brilliant detective L at the center of a standalone case. Konami developed and published the Japanese release, which remained exclusive to Japan.

The player is an unnamed rookie FBI agent sent into an undercover investigation. After being knocked unconscious, the agent comes to in an unfamiliar hotel filled with concealed dangers and must find a way out. L stays in contact through the game's portable communicator, offering guidance while the player reports discoveries from the building. That setup makes the player an active partner in the investigation rather than simply an observer of L's deductions.

Exploration drives the Nintendo DS adventure. Players move through rooms and examine their contents, searching furniture, containers, fixtures, and other suspicious objects for clues and useful tools. Items found during the search can open new paths or help address the hazards ahead, while overlooked details can leave important information behind. The game uses the DS touch-oriented interface for this close inspection, turning each room into a small scene to investigate before the next section opens.

Traps are the game's central source of pressure. Discovering a dangerous device can lead to a timed defusal challenge in which collected information and the right equipment matter. L can provide assistance through the communicator, linking the escape mechanics to the detective partnership at the heart of the premise. The game also includes deduction confrontations in which information gathered during the investigation is used to challenge opponents, giving players occasional chances to take part in the kind of reasoning associated with L.

Rasen no Wana arrived alongside the late-2000s Death Note media expansion and was released two days before the Japanese premiere of the live-action film L: Change the WorLd. Its focus on an original FBI investigation distinguishes it from the earlier DS games, which built more directly around the L-versus-Kira conflict. For Death Note fans interested in a Japan-only Nintendo DS entry, the game combines a trap-filled escape scenario, room-by-room clue hunting, and an original prequel-style story featuring L.
