About

Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing for Nintendo DS is a 2010 kart racing game developed by Sumo Digital and published by SEGA. It brings Sonic the Hedgehog together with characters from across the publisher's history for a portable race through settings inspired by SEGA games. Released in North America in February 2010, the Nintendo DS edition is part of the Sega All-Stars series and turns its crossover cast into drivers competing for cup victories, unlocks, and first place at the chequered flag.

The roster draws from Sonic and other SEGA properties, mixing familiar faces such as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Dr. Eggman, Amy and Shadow with guests including AiAi, Amigo, Alex Kidd, Billy Hatcher and Ulala. Racers do not all use the same kart: the field includes cars, motorcycles, aircraft-like machines and AiAi's oversized banana vehicle. Each character also has an individual All-Star ability designed to give them a dramatic advantage when it becomes available, making character choice part of the race rather than a cosmetic decision.

Races are built around finding the fastest route while reacting to the hazards and item boxes spread around each circuit. Drivers can drift through corners, build speed with slipstreaming, and collect tools that boost their own run or disrupt opponents. The available items include attacks and traps such as rockets, mines, hammers and boxing gloves, while moving obstacles and narrow track sections demand careful steering. A well-timed item can change the order, but clean cornering and knowing when to take a shortcut remain central to reaching the finish first.

Its tracks make the crossover premise tangible by borrowing locations and imagery from SEGA franchises. The Nintendo DS game sends competitors through places associated with Sonic Heroes, Super Monkey Ball, Samba de Amigo, Jet Set Radio and other series, so courses range from bright seaside routes to city streets and carnival-like settings. This setting variety is matched by the soundtrack's SEGA-themed material, with the handheld version using MIDI arrangements. The result is a racing game whose stages are as much a tour of the company catalogue as a series of circuits.

For solo play, Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing offers Grand Prix competition alongside single races, time-based challenges and missions. Progress earns SEGA Miles, currency used in the shop to open up additional content including racers, tracks, music and artwork. That reward structure gives the DS release objectives beyond a single cup, while its mission content supplies focused challenges outside ordinary multi-lap races. The game also includes multiplayer: two players can race with Single-Card Play, while Multi-Card Play and the original Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection options supported races for up to four players.

Although it shares the same crossover foundation as the console versions, the Nintendo DS release has its own adjustments. Some course layouts were changed for the handheld edition, it has a smaller selection of playable characters, and its Mission Mode uses a star-based scoring system rather than the letter grades used elsewhere. These differences make Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing on DS a distinct version of SEGA's 2010 racer, built around quick portable events, collectible progression, and a broad cast of mascots competing in vehicles that suit their personalities.
