About

The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night Nintendo DS is a 2007 single-player 3D action-platform game developed by Amaze Entertainment and released by Sierra Entertainment. It is the second chapter of the Legend of Spyro reboot trilogy, continuing the story begun in The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning. Although it shares its title and broad premise with the PlayStation 2 and Wii release, this is a separate handheld production rather than a direct port. The North American Nintendo DS edition arrived on October 2, 2007, with Australian and European releases following that November.

The adventure again puts the purple dragon Spyro at the center of a fight against an approaching supernatural threat. Following the events of A New Beginning, he learns that the Dark Master may return during the Night of Eternal Darkness, an eclipse-like alignment of the celestial moons. Visions guide him toward the Chronicler, while the conflict also draws in Cynder, Spyro's former adversary, and Gaul, the Ape King. The story carries the trilogy's high-fantasy thread forward and ends on a deliberate cliffhanger that leads into 2008's Dawn of the Dragon.

On DS, the journey is built as a sequence of 3D stages rather than the previous handheld game's hybrid presentation. Spyro runs, jumps, double-jumps and glides across elevated paths, moving platforms, interior chambers and more open routes. The directional pad handles movement, while the face buttons cover jumping, breath attacks, melee strikes and dodging. The shoulder buttons provide elemental switching and camera control, allowing the player to re-center the view or look around while negotiating platforming challenges.

Combat combines close-range attacks with Spyro's elemental breath. A green breath meter limits these ranged attacks, and the game lets players change elements as needed. Defeating enemies and exploring the stages also supplies resources for restoring health, spirit and fury; spirit can be spent on breath upgrades, while a full fury gauge enables a more powerful burst. When an enemy is launched into the air, the DS version adds a touch-screen finishing interaction in which the stylus is dragged across the lower screen to complete the juggle.

Exploration is important between battles. Players can seek out Dragon Scales to increase Spyro's maximum health and Dragon Teeth to expand his breath capacity, then use jumping and gliding to reach hidden routes and elevated collectibles. Several progression barriers are handled through light-and-mirror puzzles: Spyro finds mirrors around an area, places their beams onto matching receivers, and opens the way ahead. These quiet problem-solving sections give the game a different rhythm from its enemy encounters and make the handheld controls part of the puzzle process.

The Nintendo DS campaign moves through locations including the Dragon Temple, Ancient Grove, Celestial Temple and the Well of Souls as Spyro closes in on the source of the looming danger. Stages introduce environmental hazards, pathways that require careful gliding, and boss or arena-style confrontations. Sparx remains at Spyro's side as his familiar dragonfly companion, while the narrative repeatedly returns to Spyro's visions and his search for the Chronicler. The result is a compact portable interpretation of the trilogy's middle act, designed around button-led 3D movement with selective stylus use.

The Eternal Night was released across several formats in 2007, but the versions were not interchangeable. Krome Studios made the home-console game, while Amaze Entertainment handled the Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance editions, each with its own design choices. The DS release's fully 3D presentation, camera controls and touch-screen finishing mechanic distinguish it from the 2D-oriented Game Boy Advance game as well as the console version. For players following the Legend of Spyro storyline on Nintendo's dual-screen handheld, it provides the bridge between A New Beginning and Dawn of the Dragon.
