About
The Nintendo DS version of de Blob was an unreleased handheld adaptation of THQ's colour-restoration platforming series. It was developed by Helixe, THQ's specialist handheld studio, while Blue Tongue Entertainment created the released Wii game. Although it appeared in announcements alongside the Wii release, this DS project was cancelled and never received a commercial cartridge release, so it should not be confused with de Blob 2 on Nintendo DS.
The wider de Blob concept began as a Dutch freeware project about bringing colour back to a city. THQ acquired the property and built it into a retail series centered on Blob, a round hero opposing the monochrome INKT Corporation. The finished Wii game sends Blob through Chroma City, where collecting primary colours, mixing them, painting scenery, helping citizens and removing enemy influence turn gray districts into lively spaces.
Helixe's DS game was intended to bring that premise to Nintendo's dual-screen handheld. Surviving material and later coverage show an in-development 3D version in which Blob moves through an urban area and restores colour to buildings. This makes the cancelled project historically distinct from the later DS de Blob 2, which was a released sequel with its own story and a different, side-scrolling approach.
Because the Helixe version was not completed or released, its proposed content should be treated cautiously. Contemporary listing data identifies Helixe as developer and THQ as publisher, but there is no finished retail edition from which a definitive level list, narrative, feature set, rating, release date or review history can be established. Descriptions of the original Wii game's full campaign, enemies, missions and soundtrack therefore belong to that released version rather than confirmed DS software.
Interest in the lost portable adaptation resurfaced in 2023, when footage and an early build became publicly known. Reports described functional core gameplay and a build dated shortly before Helixe closed in November 2008. The discovery offered a rare look at a project that had progressed beyond a simple announcement, while also underscoring that it remained unfinished and cannot stand in for a final Nintendo DS release.
For retro-game and preservation audiences, de Blob on Nintendo DS is best understood as a cancelled Helixe project connected to the successful 2008 Wii game. Its value lies in the evidence of an ambitious handheld interpretation of a colourful platforming idea, the surviving prototype material, and its place in the development history of a franchise that eventually returned to the DS through de Blob 2. It was never sold as an original de Blob DS game, and no official finished version exists.
