About
Nintendogs: Chihuahua & Friends for Nintendo DS is Nintendo's 2005 pet-care simulation in which players adopt, name, and raise virtual puppies. Developed and published by Nintendo, this North American edition arrived on August 22, 2005 as one of several Nintendogs versions. Its kennel begins with a Chihuahua, Boxer, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, German Shepherd, Shetland Sheepdog, or Yorkshire Terrier, while additional breeds can be made available through play. The edition’s breed selection is its main difference from the companion releases; the central puppy-raising experience is shared across them.
The game turns the Nintendo DS hardware into the means of caring for a dog. Using the stylus on the Touch Screen, players stroke a puppy, brush its coat, give it food and water, bathe it, and play with toys. The built-in microphone lets an owner call a puppy by name and teach spoken commands for tricks. A dog needs regular attention to stay clean, fed, and content, so the routine is built around repeated visits, small activities, and observing how each pet responds to care and training.
Training has a practical purpose beyond looking after a puppy. Dogs can enter Disc Competitions, Agility Trials, and Obedience Trials, with stronger performances opening higher classes and earning prize money. Disc events ask players to throw a flying disc for a dog to catch, agility challenges send it through an obstacle course, and obedience tests put learned tricks to use. The money earned can go toward supplies, toys, décor, and more puppies, giving the household a gradual sense of expansion. Players may keep three dogs at home and use the Dog Hotel to manage additional pets.
Walks add another layer to the daily schedule. Taking a puppy through town can lead to presents, meetings with other dogs, and visits to places such as the park, where it can practice disc catching, or the gymnasium, where it can prepare for agility. Items found on walks and bought in shops broaden the ways a player can interact with a dog. Rather than presenting a fixed campaign with an ending, Nintendogs: Chihuahua & Friends is structured around setting personal goals: improving a puppy’s skills, collecting items, unlocking breeds, and building a well-cared-for group of pets.
Nintendo also used the DS wireless functions for Bark Mode. With compatible Nintendogs players nearby and their systems in the appropriate mode, dogs can meet wirelessly and owners can share an interaction between their games. This social feature complemented the single-player care routine without replacing it. The DS clock and calendar support the sense that time passes for the puppies between sessions, making feeding, grooming, walks, and training feel connected to a continuing household rather than isolated minigames.
Chihuahua & Friends belongs to the original Nintendogs release group, which introduced a dog simulation designed around the DS touch screen, microphone, local wireless communication, and portable play. Different regional editions used different names and starting breed lineups: Japan received Chihuahua & Friends alongside Miniature Dachshund & Friends and Shiba & Friends, while North America paired this release with Dachshund & Friends and Labrador & Friends. Later releases added other edition lineups, but this version remains a distinct way to begin the original Nintendo DS Nintendogs experience with its own initial kennel choices.
