About

NBA Street Vol. 2 for PlayStation 2 is an arcade-style basketball game released in North America in April 2003. Developed by NuFX and EA Canada and published under the EA Sports BIG label, it is the follow-up to NBA Street rather than a simulation of the NBA season. The PS2 game brings licensed NBA players, retired greats, and a deliberately exaggerated streetball presentation to outdoor courts, with three-on-three contests built around quick scoring, showmanship, and momentum.

Matches use a half-court streetball format in which passing, dribbling, shooting, blocking, and steals all feed into a fast back-and-forth contest. Players can assemble a three-player side from current NBA talent or unlocked characters, then use the PlayStation 2 controller to combine ordinary ball movement with flashy dribbles, passes, dunks, and defensive plays. The aim is not only to put points on the board: successful tricks help build a team’s Gamebreaker meter, giving skillful sequences a tactical purpose.

Gamebreaker is the central risk-and-reward system in NBA Street Vol. 2 PS2. Once the meter is filled, a team can spend it on a dramatic scoring play, or hold it to pursue the stronger second-level Gamebreaker. Holding out can create a bigger swing, but it also leaves room for the other side to answer. The game’s trick controls therefore matter in competitive play as much as the final shot, while defensive pressure can interrupt an opponent’s rhythm before that momentum becomes a decisive highlight.

Several modes provide different ways to take to the blacktop. Pick Up Game supports casual games against the computer or other players, including adjustable house rules. NBA Challenge sends teams through a series of matchups at regional courts and awards points and unlocks. Be a Legend centers on creating a baller and a team, building a reputation through pickup games and tournaments, and earning access to more streetball content as the player rises through the game’s circuit. Street School offers guided lessons hosted by streetball figure Stretch Monroe, making it a place to learn the game’s controls and advanced ideas.

The roster draws from the NBA’s 2002–03 era and is supplemented by unlockable NBA legends and streetball personalities. NBA Street Vol. 2 is also notable for offering multiple playable versions of Michael Jordan, representing his early Chicago Bulls years, the 1990s Bulls, and the Washington Wizards period. Courts, jerseys, players, and moves can be opened with reward points or progress, so the single-player modes give each successful game a practical payoff beyond the next exhibition.

EA released NBA Street Vol. 2 for PlayStation 2 alongside GameCube and Xbox editions, although the PlayStation 2 version was the only one issued in Japan. Up to four people can participate in multiplayer games, making the PS2 release suited to local competitive sessions as well as solo progression. Its mix of licensed basketball stars, stylized physical play, hip-hop-oriented presentation, and trick-driven scoring established its place as the second entry in EA Sports BIG’s NBA Street series; NBA Street V3 followed in 2005.
