About

Released for PlayStation 2 in 2003, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time reintroduced Jordan Mechner's series as a third-person action-adventure from Ubisoft Montreal. The game puts its hero in a vast, trap-filled Persian palace and treats movement as its central skill: the Prince sprints across walls, swings from poles, climbs ledges, vaults gaps, and turns precarious scenery into a route forward.

The story begins after the Prince joins his father King Sharaman's assault on an Indian maharajah's city, urged on by the treacherous Vizier. He claims the Dagger of Time while the army carries away a great hourglass containing the Sands. At the Sultan of Azad's palace, the Vizier manipulates him into releasing the Sands, transforming the inhabitants into sand creatures and leaving the Prince to confront the disaster he caused.

Farah, the maharajah's daughter, becomes the Prince's wary ally in the ruined palace. Their shifting partnership supplies much of the adventure's character, as each has a reason to seek the Dagger and neither initially has grounds to trust the other. The tale is framed as the Prince recounting his experience, giving the narration an unusually direct role in how the journey is presented.

The Dagger is more than a story artifact. Sand gathered from defeated creatures fuels powers that can rewind a mistaken jump or fatal hit, slow the action around the Prince, freeze an enemy, or briefly halt time. Rewinding is especially important on PlayStation 2's demanding obstacle courses, allowing a close call to become a correction instead of a full restart.

Combat mixes swordplay, evasive movement, and positioning against groups of sand creatures. Knocking an enemy down with the sword is not enough to finish it; the Prince must use the Dagger to absorb its sand, replenishing the resource that supports his time powers. Farah assists with her bow during several encounters, though protecting her and managing multiple attackers are part of the challenge.

Between battles, the palace's architecture drives the progression through waterworks, towers, gardens, prisons, and elaborate mechanical hazards. Puzzles commonly involve moving scenery, pressure plates, doors, and timing, while hidden fountains provide opportunities to save and recover. The PlayStation 2 edition also includes the original Prince of Persia as an unlockable bonus, linking this 3D revival to the 1989 classic that began the series.
