About

Silent Hill 4: The Room for PlayStation 2 is a 2004 survival-horror game from Konami’s Team Silent. The fourth main entry in the Silent Hill series moves much of its action away from the titular town to South Ashfield, where Henry Townshend has spent five days sealed inside apartment 302. His telephone is dead, his windows are shut, and chains block the front door. A message tells him not to leave. When a hole opens in his bathroom wall, it becomes his only route out—and the starting point for a nightmare tied to the building’s past.

Henry enters the hole to reach a succession of unsettling spaces, including a subway, forest, prison, hospital, and apartment complex. These worlds are connected by the presence of Walter Sullivan, a serial killer whose history, victims, and ritual gradually emerge through encounters, documents, and the traces left by a former resident of room 302. The game’s mystery joins Henry’s confinement to Walter’s attempt to complete the 21 Sacraments, making the apartment both a refuge and a central piece of the danger.

The PS2 version divides its viewpoint by location. Inside room 302, Henry explores from a first-person perspective, examining the apartment’s windows, peephole, furnishings, and changes that appear as the story advances. The other worlds use third-person movement and fixed or shifting camera angles familiar to the series. Holes return Henry to the apartment, which initially serves as a place to save, restore health, store excess items, and review what he has found. Its role changes sharply later on, when supernatural hauntings begin to invade the room and can harm him instead.

Exploration combines environmental observation, keys and quest items, written clues, and comparatively direct puzzles. Henry’s carrying capacity is limited, so the storage chest in room 302 matters when deciding what to bring through a hole and what to leave behind. Combat has a larger role than in several earlier Silent Hill games. Henry can use melee weapons and two firearms; some melee weapons break, while charged attacks trade time for a stronger blow. Talismans, holy candles, and similar items can also be used against the apartment’s increasingly hostile hauntings, though protective equipment is not permanent.

Walter’s victims return as ghosts, an enemy type that cannot simply be killed through ordinary damage. They drift through areas, pursue Henry, and create an urgent threat even after other monsters have been dealt with. Special ammunition can put a ghost down for a time, while limited Swords of Obedience can pin one in place. This turns route planning and item use into part of surviving an area, especially when the apartment itself is no longer safe. The ghosts are also narrative evidence: the people Henry meets in the worlds are caught in the same murderous pattern that is closing around him.

During the latter half, Henry is accompanied by his neighbor Eileen Galvin. She can help in a fight and cannot die while traveling with him, but repeated damage increases her possession and puts her at greater risk in the final confrontation. Giving her a firearm also affects that danger. The condition of Eileen and the condition of room 302 therefore carry through to the conclusion rather than remaining background details. Henry’s eventual battle with Walter follows his discovery that he is meant to be the ritual’s twenty-first victim.

Four endings reflect those outcomes: Escape, Mother, Eileen’s Death, and 21 Sacraments. They depend on whether Eileen survives the ending and on how thoroughly the apartment has been overtaken by hauntings. The Room retains the series’ psychological and supernatural horror while deliberately reshaping its usual formula: a private domestic space replaces the town as the player’s hub, the changing apartment gives first-person scenes an intimate focus, and combat, persistent ghosts, and a companion relationship place practical pressure on Henry’s attempt to get out.
