About
Turok: Evolution for PlayStation 2 is a 2002 first-person shooter from Acclaim Studios Austin and Acclaim Entertainment. It is a prequel to the 1997 game Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, but it introduces a different Tal'Set at the beginning of his path toward the Turok mantle. The PlayStation 2 release arrived alongside GameCube and Xbox versions, taking a series previously associated with Nintendo 64 hardware into the next console generation. Its adventure combines firearms, prehistoric wildlife, hostile armies, and an otherworldly conflict in the jungle-filled Lost Land.
The story opens in the American West, where Tal'Set is fighting Captain Tobias Bruckner when both men are pulled through a rift. Tal'Set survives the journey into the Lost Land and is aided by the people of River Village, who are under pressure from the Sleg, reptilian humanoid invaders. As he learns more about the war, he works with the village and the seer Tarkeen, travels toward the human capital of Galyana, and comes to confront both Bruckner and the responsibility attached to the name Turok.
Most of the campaign uses a first-person view. Tal'Set can move through environments by running, jumping, crouching, swimming, and climbing ladders or vines while searching for routes, supplies, and objectives. Combat begins with close-range options such as the tomahawk and expands into a varied arsenal that includes pistols, shotguns, grenades, flamethrowers, and heavier explosive weapons. The opposing forces are not limited to Sleg soldiers: dinosaurs and other dangerous creatures inhabit the same spaces, making encounters a mixture of armed combat and survival in hostile terrain.
Turok: Evolution also breaks up its on-foot missions with aerial sequences. Tal'Set rides a pterosaur-like flying mount through the Lost Land, attacking enemies on the ground and in the air. Some of these stages guide the player through a set flight path, while others allow more freedom to maneuver. This structure lets the game shift between corridor-and-jungle shooting, large-scale assaults, and airborne action as the campaign moves through villages, temples, mountain routes, military positions, and the Suspended City.
The PlayStation 2 edition supports a single-player story mode as well as local split-screen multiplayer for up to two players. Multiplayer arenas offer a separate competitive use for the game's weapons and creature-filled world, but the core of the release is Tal'Set's campaign across the Lost Land. The PS2 manual also documents autosaving for progress and separate option saves on a compatible memory card, reflecting the console-focused design of the release.
Within the Turok series, Evolution is notable for both its narrative position and its hardware transition. Acclaim Studios Austin, the team formerly known as Iguana Entertainment, had worked on earlier Turok games; for Evolution it built a multiplatform entry rather than another Nintendo 64 exclusive. The home-console versions share the same main premise and broad design, while the Game Boy Advance game released under the same title is a separate handheld adaptation. For players exploring PlayStation 2 shooters, Turok: Evolution offers a self-contained dinosaur-hunting adventure with a prequel story, a large weapon selection, and the series' long-planned aerial combat brought into the campaign.
