About

Final Fantasy XII International: Zodiac Job System is Square Enix’s 2007 Japanese PlayStation 2 revision of the 2006 role-playing game Final Fantasy XII. Set in the Ivalice of the original adventure, it follows Vaan, a young Rabanastre resident drawn into Dalmasca’s struggle against the Archadian Empire, alongside Ashe, Balthier, Fran, Basch, and Penelo. This edition keeps the story, world, and real-time Active Dimension Battle framework intact, but substantially rebuilds character development and several game systems. Despite the word “International” in its name, this PS2 release was issued in Japan rather than becoming a worldwide edition.

Exploration moves through connected towns, wilderness regions, dungeons, and airship routes, with enemies visible in the field rather than hidden behind random encounters. A party of three fights in real time while the player can pause through menus to choose attacks, magicks, technicks, items, and other actions. The battle system permits direct control of any active party member, but it also supports gambits: customizable conditional commands that tell companions how to respond to situations such as an ally needing healing or a particular enemy being available. That mixture of hands-on orders and prepared tactics lets players decide how automated each encounter should be.

The defining change in Final Fantasy XII International: Zodiac Job System is its replacement of the original game’s shared License Board with twelve separate Zodiac job boards. Each board is associated with a distinct role, including jobs such as Knight, White Mage, Black Mage, Archer, Monk, Bushi, Shikari, and Time Battlemage. Choosing a board gives a character a more focused route through weapons, armor, spells, abilities, and permanent upgrades, encouraging the party to be planned around complementary specialties. License Points still come from battle, but the revised board structure makes the consequences of building each character more clearly defined than in the original PlayStation 2 release.

The campaign’s central systems remain tied to the setting of Ivalice. Defeated enemies yield loot that can be sold for gil, and particular combinations of sold goods unlock Bazaar packages in shops. Hunts send the party after marked monsters beyond the main story, while Espers can be defeated and then summoned under special battle conditions. Quickenings provide character-specific Mist-powered attacks that can be chained into larger combinations. Chocobos, teleport-capable save crystals, airships, and the Strahl all help give the journey a travel-focused shape as the party moves between the desert kingdom of Dalmasca, the Archadian Empire, and other regions.

This revision also adds a 100-stage Trial Mode built around consecutive monster battles, plus New Game+ and New Game- options. A speed mode makes field movement and routine travel quicker, and the release includes the English voice track and widescreen presentation associated with the western version of Final Fantasy XII. These additions sit alongside adjustments made for the job-based progression rather than replacing the original plot with a sequel or remake. The result is a PS2-era alternate version designed around a more specialized party system and repeatable combat challenge.

Final Fantasy XII International: Zodiac Job System is therefore distinct from both the first Final Fantasy XII release and Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age. The former uses its original License Board design, while the latter is a later high-definition remaster derived from the Japanese International edition and adds further changes of its own. For players interested in the history of Final Fantasy XII on PlayStation 2, International: Zodiac Job System marks the first appearance of the twelve-job approach that later became closely associated with the game’s modern re-release.
