About
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army for PlayStation 2 is a 2006 action role-playing game developed by Atlus. It is the third Devil Summoner game and part of the wider Megami Tensei franchise, but it takes the series in a markedly different direction from its turn-based contemporaries. The North American release arrived in October 2006, following the Japanese launch earlier that year. Set in a stylized version of 1931 Tokyo during the Taishō era, it combines a supernatural detective case with a city caught between older Japanese traditions and fast-moving modern influences.
The player controls Raidou Kuzunoha XIV, a young detective and Devil Summoner working from the Narumi Detective Agency alongside private investigator Shōhei Narumi and Raidou's talking cat companion, Gouto-Douji. Bound to protect the Capital for the secretive Yatagarasu organization, Raidou is drawn into a case when Kaya Daidōji asks the agency to kill her and is immediately abducted by mysterious red-cloaked soldiers. The investigation expands from everyday requests and local rumors into a threat involving demons, the military, and the fate of the city.
Rather than use the usual turn-based format associated with many Megami Tensei games, the PlayStation 2 original uses real-time battles in separate combat arenas. Raidou fights directly with a sword and gun while calling one demon companion to his side. Successful play means managing the demon's magic resource, matching attacks to enemy weaknesses, defending Raidou when necessary, and deciding when to withdraw from a fight. Encounters occur while exploring Tokyo and its supernatural counterpart, the Dark Realm, tying action combat to the investigation's changing locations.
Demons are more than temporary helpers. After weakening enemies, Raidou can confine them and add them to his roster, then summon the right companion for combat or use a demon's special investigation skill in the field. Working alongside a demon builds its loyalty, while the Goumaden fusion facility lets players combine demons into new allies. The game also includes methods for strengthening demons and forging one into Raidou's sword, making the collection and fusion systems central to both battles and character growth.
Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army stands out within Devil Summoner for giving its protagonist a defined identity and for relocating its occult detective storytelling to an earlier period than the franchise's more familiar contemporary or ruined worlds. Its fictionalized Tokyo mixes period-style streets, Western-influenced architecture, newspapers, trains, and local businesses with mythological demons and otherworldly spaces. The presentation supports a case-by-case adventure in which information gathering, conversations, and demon abilities are as important as fighting.
The PlayStation 2 release was published by Atlus in Japan and North America; Koei handled the European edition, which arrived in 2007. The English localization gave the game the longer Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner title, while the Japanese release used the Devil Summoner name. Raidou's first case continued in the direct 2008 sequel Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon. The original game later returned through PlayStation Store availability for PlayStation 3, and its 1930s detective premise was revisited in the modern remaster Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army.
