About
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Double Agent for PlayStation 2 is a 2006 stealth-action game from Ubisoft Montreal, published by Ubisoft. It is the fourth main Splinter Cell adventure and returns players to the role of NSA operative Sam Fisher, voiced by Michael Ironside. This PS2 edition belongs to the version also released for Xbox, GameCube, and later Wii; despite sharing its title and premise with the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 release, it has its own campaign structure and levels.
The story begins after a devastating personal loss leaves Fisher struggling to continue his work for Third Echelon. His handler, Irving Lambert, sends him into deep cover within John Brown's Army, a terrorist organization led by Emile Dufraisne. To keep the assignment credible, Fisher is positioned as a criminal and enters Ellsworth Prison, where an escape alongside JBA member Jamie Washington opens the door to the group. From there, his mission is to uncover and stop a red-mercury bomb plot while maintaining the dangerous identity that gives him access.
Double Agent builds its missions around the careful stealth play associated with the series. Fisher moves through guarded facilities and public spaces, using shadows, cover, observation, lock picking, hacking, and his familiar field equipment to reach objectives without raising alarms. The PlayStation 2 controls map movement, aiming, interaction, gadgets, and close-quarters actions to the DualShock 2, giving players ways to approach encounters quietly or react when a plan unravels. Missions combine required objectives with intelligence to collect, computers to access, and enemies or security systems to evade.
The central tension is loyalty. Fisher receives competing demands from Third Echelon and the JBA, so individual decisions can improve one side's trust while jeopardizing the other. Choices surrounding information, sabotage, and the fate of key targets affect how the operation develops and what consequences appear by the end. Locations take the undercover agent from the prison and the JBA's New Orleans base to sites including Grand Central Terminal, a cruise ship in Cozumel, an oil tanker in the Sea of Okhotsk, and Kinshasa, making each assignment another test of his cover and judgment.
This PlayStation 2 version also extends the game beyond Fisher's solo campaign. Cooperative missions let two players serve as Splinter Cell operatives on connected operations that support events in the main story, including missions in Iceland, Ellsworth Prison, Kinshasa, and against the bomb threat. Its competitive Spy vs. Upsilon modes place agile spies and armed opponents in asymmetric online matches built around hacking, defense, eliminations, keys, and timed objectives. As a cross-generation-era Splinter Cell release, Double Agent is notable for being a distinct PS2 game rather than a direct conversion of the later-system edition.
