About

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King is a turn-based role-playing game developed by Level-5 and published by Square Enix for PlayStation 2. This North American edition arrived on November 15, 2005, bringing the long-running series to the system with a fully three-dimensional presentation and cel-shaded character and environment art.

The adventure begins after the jester Dhoulmagus steals a powerful sceptre and curses the kingdom of Trodain. Its royal guard, the player-named silent Hero, survives the attack and sets out with the transformed King Trode and Princess Medea to pursue the culprit. Along the way, Yangus, Jessica, and Angelo join the party, each contributing distinct weapons, magic, and personal skill options.

Players travel across a broad world of fields, towns, castles, seas, and dungeons. The camera can be freely rotated, and a first-person view lets players inspect the surroundings more closely. The game's large, connected locations marked a significant visual shift for the series while retaining its familiar fantasy tone, character designs by Akira Toriyama, and music by Koichi Sugiyama.

Combat uses the series' menu-driven, turn-based structure. Characters can attack, cast spells, use items, or employ learned abilities; battles show the party and enemies in motion after commands are chosen. The Psyche Up command lets a character sacrifice turns to build tension, strengthening a later attack and adding another decision to encounters.

Experience points and gold earned from battles support the party's growth and equipment purchases. After the early levels, characters also receive skill points that can be invested in weapon specialties, Fisticuffs, or their individual special attributes. These choices unlock new techniques and spells, allowing the group to be shaped around different combat preferences.

The PlayStation 2 release also includes the Alchemy Pot, which combines items into useful equipment and materials while the party travels, and a Monster Arena side activity built around recruiting certain defeated monsters. The North American localization adds English voice acting, revised presentation elements, and the title Dragon Quest rather than the earlier North American Dragon Warrior name, making this release a notable entry in the series' Western history.
