About
Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge PS2 is a 3D action-adventure game developed by Capcom, continuing the story of the 1993 film with Jack Skellington back in Halloween Town. The PlayStation 2 version first appeared in Japan in 2004, with Buena Vista Interactive publishing the North American release in 2005; Capcom handled publishing in other territories. It is a separate game from the Game Boy Advance title The Pumpkin King, which tells an earlier story. Here, Jack returns after setting out to find fresh inspiration for Halloween and discovers that Oogie Boogie has been restored and has begun turning the town against him.
The adventure is built around Jack's Soul Robber, a living green ribbon-like weapon created by Doctor Finkelstein. In battle it works as a close-range lash, but its grab function is just as important: Jack can seize enemies, slam them into the ground, swing them at other monsters, and interact with objects in the scenery. The tool also reaches marked points for traversal, letting Jack grapple across gaps and investigate side areas. Charged moves and a spinning attack add options when Halloween Town's creatures crowd the screen, while taunting an enemy can make a fight riskier in exchange for a fully charged Soul Robber and better rewards.
Oogie's Revenge alternates its combat with platforming, environmental tasks, puzzles, and boss encounters across a chapter-based campaign. Jack earns souls and finds items that support upgrades, and each chapter receives a Nightmare Rank based on factors such as completion time, combos, damage taken, and special enemy challenges. That structure gives the game a reason to revisit stages after the main objective is complete, whether the aim is to improve a result, locate bonuses, or use a newly acquired ability in an earlier area.
Jack does not rely on one fighting style for the entire journey. The Pumpkin King form spends red souls on flame attacks and explosive fire bombs, useful against enemies and barriers that ordinary attacks cannot handle. Santa Jack instead deploys a selection of trick presents, including effects that can hinder foes, and switches the mood from direct melee to placing and triggering traps. Unlockable costumes provide further visual variations, while the two powered forms are tied directly to the campaign's puzzles and combat challenges rather than being merely decorative.
The story brings back familiar residents of Halloween Town, including Sally, Doctor Finkelstein, the Mayor, and the troublesome Lock, Shock, and Barrel. Oogie seeks more than control of Jack's holiday: he interferes with the doors connected to other celebrations and endangers their leaders, sending Jack through locations such as the graveyard, laboratory, pumpkin patch, and Oogie's own trap-filled territory. Christmas Town becomes a later destination, making the conflict a continuation of the film's mix of Halloween imagery, holiday worlds, and the relationship between Jack and Sally.
Bosses add a musical twist to the action. As Jack attacks, notes can appear, and successful play leads into timed dance sequences where button prompts determine how effectively he can hurt the opponent. The game also incorporates recognizable musical material from the film alongside original music, and members of the film's voice cast returned for their characters. These elements help its stylized characters and crooked, stop-motion-inspired settings feel connected to the source while the story moves beyond the movie's ending.
Released for PlayStation 2 and later Xbox, Oogie's Revenge arrived during Capcom's early-2000s action-game period and uses a combat framework that favors approachable combinations of attacking, grabbing, platforming, and light rhythm challenges. Its campaign is framed as Jack's effort to rescue his town, undo Oogie Boogie's scheme, and protect the other holiday worlds. For players exploring Nightmare Before Christmas games on PS2, it stands as the console sequel centered on Jack Skellington rather than the handheld prequel centered on his earlier clash with Oogie.
