About
SSX On Tour for PlayStation 2 is a high-speed snowboarding and skiing game released in October 2005. Developed by EA Canada and published under the EA Sports BIG label, it is the fourth main entry in the SSX series. Rather than center its career on a fixed roster, this PS2 outing asks players to build a rider from the ground up and chase a place at the summit of the in-game SSX rankings. Its exaggerated downhill racing, stunt scoring, and rock-show presentation give the mountain a deliberately loud arcade identity.
Tour mode begins with a custom male or female athlete, choosing snowboarding or skiing before setting a look and personal details. From there, the goal is to accumulate Hype, improve the rider's standing, and unlock the medal competitions that lead toward the top of the tour. The mountain is organized through a resort-style trail map, so players select routes and challenges while working through a connected ski-resort setting instead of simply advancing through a linear list of courses. Familiar SSX riders return as opponents and playable choices outside the central career.
The core action mixes full-speed descents with tricks performed off jumps, rails, and other features along the routes. Standard event types include races, trick contests, and slopestyle challenges that combine finishing position with stunt points. Tour mode also offers shorter Shred challenges with specific objectives, such as meeting a target score, staying airborne, landing handplants, collecting markers, or carrying a rail grind far enough before reaching the finish. These varied goals encourage players to learn course layouts and decide when to prioritize speed, clean landings, or a more ambitious line.
Skiing is the major new option in SSX On Tour, sitting alongside the series' established snowboards and offering its own aerial animation and feel while keeping the same accessible arcade foundation. Building the boost meter through ordinary moves opens the door to Monster Tricks, the renamed successor to the series' Über Tricks. On PlayStation 2, the right analog stick is used to trigger these oversized special maneuvers once the meter is ready. High-speed runs also reward close calls on the busy slopes, while collisions can cost valuable momentum.
EA Canada reshaped the presentation around scribbled notebook art: menus, icons, and collectible-style graphics use rough linework and cartoonish doodles rather than the polished look associated with SSX 3. The effect extends beyond the interface, complementing a licensed soundtrack that ranges across rock, punk, hip-hop, dance, and classic heavy metal. Sound design shifts with the ride as well, emphasizing the board or skis on snow at lower speed and the rush of wind during a hard boost or huge jump.
The PlayStation 2 version supports local split-screen play for two people, but it does not include an online multiplayer mode. It shares its main content closely with the Xbox edition, while the Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach guest characters belong to the GameCube version rather than this PS2 release. For players exploring the PS2 SSX catalog, SSX On Tour stands as the series' character-creation-focused chapter: a game about shaping a rookie skier or boarder, mastering a dense collection of downhill challenges, and turning every mountain run into a push for more Hype.
