About

Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal is Insomniac Games' 2004 PlayStation 2 action-platform adventure, published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It is the third main game in the original Ratchet & Clank trilogy and is known as Ratchet & Clank 3 in parts of Europe and Africa. The story returns Lombax hero Ratchet and his robot partner Clank to a galaxy in danger, beginning with an assault on Ratchet's home planet, Veldin. Their search for the force behind the invasion leads them to Doctor Nefarious, a robotic villain with a plan to remove organic life from the galaxy.

The Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal PS2 campaign blends running, jumping, shooting, exploration, and gadget-based problem solving across a sequence of science-fiction worlds. Ratchet moves through enemy bases, cities, wilderness areas, and other planetary locations with his OmniWrench for close-range attacks and a growing collection of outlandish firearms for combat at a distance. Clank rides with Ratchet for much of the journey, providing movement options and access to equipment that supports platforming and exploration. The result is a brisk third-person adventure that regularly moves between traversal challenges, firefights, side objectives, and boss encounters.

An arsenal is central to the game's progression. Players earn bolts while completing missions and use them to acquire weapons and gadgets, then improve much of their equipment through continued use and later upgrades. The tools range from familiar blasters and explosive launchers to deliberately eccentric inventions, giving encounters several possible approaches. This weapon-focused structure distinguishes Up Your Arsenal from a conventional platform game: choosing the right tool, keeping space from a crowd, and learning how equipment changes as it develops are as important as making a difficult jump.

The campaign also varies its perspective and playable roles. Ratchet handles the majority of the action, while dedicated Clank sections ask players to direct small Gadgebots through obstacles and enemy positions. Giant Clank sequences turn the compact robot sidekick into a towering combatant for battles on a different scale. Captain Qwark, the boastful would-be hero from earlier games, receives his own 2D Vid Comic episodes, which tell parts of the backstory through side-scrolling action. These diversions give the adventure a broader range of pacing without replacing Ratchet and Clank's central partnership.

The main plot brings back Captain Qwark and other familiar faces while introducing Doctor Nefarious, Ranger captain Sasha Phyronix, and the Q-Force. Ratchet and Clank pursue Nefarious through a conflict involving the Tyhrranoids and the Biobliterator, a device intended to transform living beings into robots. Comedy remains an important part of the presentation, from Qwark's tall tales to the series' exaggerated gadgets and villains, but the objective stays clear: build enough capability to confront Nefarious before his plan can reshape the galaxy.

Up Your Arsenal also marked a major expansion for the series by adding competitive multiplayer to its PlayStation 2 release. The original game supported offline split-screen matches for up to four people with the PS2 Multitap, and online matches for up to eight players using a broadband connection. Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and Siege were among its competitive modes, with arenas, weapons, vehicles, player skins, and team play drawing on the campaign's comic science-fiction setting. That feature made the game a more social package while leaving the full single-player story intact.

Its place in the PlayStation 2 era is tied both to its polished action-platform format and to that multiplayer step forward. Sony later included Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal with the first two games in the Ratchet & Clank Collection, an HD remaster prepared with Insomniac's involvement for PlayStation 3. For players exploring the original trilogy, it continues the story after Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando and establishes Doctor Nefarious as one of the series' recurring adversaries before the following game's separate adventure, Ratchet: Deadlocked.
