About
OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast for PlayStation 2 is a 2006 arcade-style racing game developed by Sumo Digital and published by Sega. Built around Sega AM2's OutRun 2 and OutRun 2 SP arcade material, it brings the series' sunlit Ferrari road-racing formula to PS2 with an emphasis on branching routes, time pressure, controlled slides, and immediate restartable runs. The North American and European game is called OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast; the related Japanese PS2 release uses the OutRun 2 SP name.
Races are not closed-circuit simulations. Players drive toward successive checkpoints, choosing directions at forks to create a route through changing scenery, traffic, and corner layouts. Reaching each checkpoint extends the clock, so a run depends on carrying enough speed through bends, avoiding collisions, and deciding which road to take before the next split. The result retains the arcade structure associated with the earlier OutRun games while presenting it through 3D courses and licensed Ferrari cars.
The PlayStation 2 version includes the OutRun, Heart Attack, and Time Attack modes associated with OutRun 2 SP. Standard OutRun challenges concentrate on completing a route before time expires. Heart Attack adds a passenger and asks the driver to earn points with stylish driving, such as drifts and near misses, while Time Attack focuses on setting a fast run. Cars are grouped into handling and performance classes, letting players choose between more accessible responses and faster, more demanding machines.
Coast 2 Coast also adds a mission-based progression mode. Its challenges include head-to-head races, drifting tests, slipstream challenges that reward drafting behind traffic, elimination events, and scenarios built around keeping ahead of a rival couple. Completing events earns OutRun Miles, the currency used to unlock further cars, courses, music, and other content. This gives the PS2 game a broader single-player structure alongside the direct arcade modes.
Ferrari is central to the game's identity, and the roster spans 15 licensed models, including cars carried over from OutRun 2 SP and additions such as the F430, 550 Barchetta, F355 Spider, Superamerica, and 328 GTS. Each vehicle has its own performance balance, while the special OutRun class offers boosted versions with distinctive visual treatment. The courses combine the fifteen stages associated with OutRun 2 and OutRun 2 SP, so alternative route choices can lead from coastal roads to cities, mountains, and other stylized locations.
On PlayStation 2, OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast supports DualShock 2 analog controls with configurable settings and vibration. At release it also offered network and LAN play, and owners of both the PS2 and PSP versions could link their saved licenses by USB to transfer or merge progress and unlock bonus content. That cross-platform feature makes this PS2 edition distinct from the later Japanese OutRun 2 SP release, while its blend of arcade routes, Ferrari licensing, and mission challenges places it as a substantial late entry in Sega's long-running OutRun series.
