About
Oshiete! Popotan is a Japanese PlayStation 2 visual novel, released in Japan on March 11, 2004 by WellMADE. Based on Petit Ferret’s 2002 PC game Popotan and its later DVD-ROM edition, this console version recasts the series as a choice-driven adventure for a single player. Its title uses the Japanese word associated with dandelions, an image that becomes central to the setting’s mysteries. Rather than adapting the separate television anime storyline, the game follows the original visual novel’s protagonist, Chris, and his encounters with the residents of an unusual mansion near the ruined remains of Tokyo.
The story begins with Chris, a drifting high-school dropout who earns money playing guitar on the street and has little confidence in his direction. While looking for food and work, he is led to a striking Western-style house that seems out of place amid the altered landscape. There he meets the three sisters Ai, Mai, and Mii, along with their maid Mea. Chris becomes a lodger and takes a part-time job, opening the way for a character-focused tale about daily life, changing relationships, and the strange spire that transformed Tokyo long before the opening events.
Like other visual novels, Oshiete! Popotan is built chiefly around reading dialogue and Chris’s internal narration, then choosing responses or destinations at key points. The main events give the game an overarching path, while decisions steer the player toward different personal storylines and endings. Daytime exploration lets Chris move around town, meet its inhabitants, and trigger scenes. The PS2 release also includes a shortcut option for advancing to the next event, making it easier to revisit the story’s branching routes. Completing scenarios can reveal further content, encouraging players to explore more than one path through the game.
The supporting cast gives those routes their individual character. Ai is the eldest sister and has an affinity with plants; Mai is more forthright and skeptical of Chris at first; and energetic young Mii performs as Magical Girl Mii. Mii’s storyline incorporates a timing-based music mini-game in which successful inputs build her magical-power meter, with the result affecting the course of that scenario. Chris also meets people beyond the mansion, including classmate Konami, shrine maiden Nono, and the enigmatic Shizuku. These meetings gradually connect the romantic and slice-of-life episodes to the broader questions surrounding the setting.
Oshiete! Popotan is specifically the PS2 version, not the original adult PC release or the 2003 anime. WellMADE produced and distributed the port from the DVD-ROM version, altering or removing material for the console release and changing some scenes and events. It nevertheless retains the visual novel’s anime-style character presentation, location-based event flow, and music-centered touches. The release arrived during a period when Japanese PlayStation 2 publishers were bringing PC visual novels to a wider console audience, and it remains a useful snapshot of the Popotan franchise’s original game narrative, whose characters and dandelion imagery later appeared across several related media.
