About
Oni is a third-person action game set in a polluted cyberpunk future where much of Earth has become uninhabitable. Players take the role of Konoko, an operative of the Technological Crimes Task Force who is drawn into a conflict between her employers and the criminal Syndicate.
The PlayStation 2 version was released in 2001 and was ported by Rockstar Canada. Its campaign follows Konoko as revelations about her past change her understanding of the TCTF, the Syndicate, and the wider World Coalition Government that controls society.
Combat mixes close-quarters martial arts with occasional firearms. Konoko can punch, kick, dodge, throw opponents, perform advanced moves, and disarm enemies, while later stages make more powerful combinations available.
Guns include handguns, rifles, rocket launchers, and energy weapons, but ammunition is limited and Konoko can carry only one weapon at a time. This keeps unarmed fighting at the center of the game, while healing hyposprays and cloaking devices provide additional tactical options.
The adventure spans fourteen levels across locations such as city districts, warehouses, research facilities, and large institutional buildings. Enemies belong to several combat classes and become more formidable through color-coded strength tiers.
Oni's visual direction draws on cyberpunk anime, especially Ghost in the Shell and Akira. The game uses interpolated animation to give Konoko's martial-arts moves a fluid feel as she explores the future city and fights to stop a plan that threatens the world's remaining air-treatment centers.
