About
Fushigi Yuugi: Suzaku Ibun is a Japanese PlayStation 2 adventure game released on May 29, 2008. Developed and published by Idea Factory, it adapts the world of Yuu Watase’s Fushigi Yuugi into a single-player, text-led romance adventure. The game was released in Japan under the title ふしぎ遊戯 朱雀異聞 and presents an original variation on the series’ familiar tale of modern schoolgirls transported into the world of The Universe of the Four Gods.
The player follows Madoka Otori, a third-year middle-school student preparing for high-school entrance exams. Madoka and her childhood friend Misaki Himuro are drawn into the mysterious book Shijin Tenchisho. Separated in an unfamiliar world, Madoka is taken in by the emperor of Konan and learns that she has been brought there as the Priestess of Suzaku. With Konan threatened by war, she accepts the task of finding the Suzaku Seven Celestial Warriors, while also trying to reunite with Misaki and return home.
Suzaku Ibun uses a new pair of heroines rather than retelling the original story with Miaka Yuki and Yui Hongo in the leading roles. Misaki, Madoka’s classmate and longtime friend, becomes the Priestess of Seiryu, setting the two girls on opposing sides as the conflict widens. This change lets the game revisit the franchise’s central setting, rival nations, and four-gods mythology through its own heroine and relationships.
Progress centers on reading scenes, selecting responses, and making choices during Madoka’s journey. Those decisions affect her connections with the characters around her and direct the story toward different romantic and concluding routes. The focus is on following Madoka’s role as Suzaku’s priestess, learning about the people of Konan, and deciding how she responds to the pressures created by war, destiny, and her damaged friendship with Misaki.
The Suzaku Seven are central to the adventure. Madoka meets Tamahome, the martial artist; Hotohori, Konan’s sword-wielding emperor; Nuriko, whose strength contrasts with a deliberately feminine presentation; and Tasuki, the former bandit who fights with an iron fan that produces fire. The group also includes healer Mitsukake, sorcerer Chichiri, and the young strategist Chiriko. Their personalities, abilities, and individual histories provide the major character threads around the main quest.
The opposing Seiryu side gives the story its dramatic counterweight, while Madoka’s bond with Misaki keeps the conflict personal. Rather than being an action game built around combat, Fushigi Yuugi: Suzaku Ibun is structured as a choice-driven visual-novel-style adventure, using dialogue and route progression to explore an alternate take on a well-known shojo fantasy setting.
The PS2 release was followed by Fushigi Yuugi DS in Japan in 2009, where Suzaku Ibun was included alongside Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden Gaiden - Kagami no Miko. Nintendo’s description of that compilation notes that the two included stories stand independently, but the original PS2 version remains the first release of Madoka’s Suzaku-focused story. For players interested in Fushigi Yuugi on PS2, it offers a self-contained interpretation of the series’ Konan adventure and its cast of Celestial Warriors.
