About

Ace Combat: Distant Thunder is the European title for Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies, Namco's 2001 PlayStation 2 air-combat game, released across PAL territories in February 2002. Developed by Namco's AC04 Project, the team that became associated with Project Aces, it is the fourth main Ace Combat entry and the series' first outing on PlayStation 2. Set in the fictional world later known as Strangereal, the game combines recognisable modern military aircraft with a dramatic, invented war story rather than recreating a real conflict.

The campaign places the player in the cockpit as Mobius 1, a pilot serving the Independent State Allied Forces, or ISAF. After the Ulysses asteroid disaster has destabilised the continent of Usea, the Republic of Erusea exploits the upheaval to invade its neighbours. ISAF retreats, regroups, and begins a counteroffensive; Mobius 1 becomes one of its most important pilots. Between missions, illustrated interludes relate the war from the viewpoint of civilians in occupied San Salvacion and introduce the opposing Yellow Squadron, giving the conflict a perspective beyond the radio calls heard in the air.

Ace Combat: Distant Thunder is built around 18 single-player missions that vary their objectives rather than limiting the player to pure dogfighting. Sorties include intercepting hostile aircraft, attacking ground and naval targets, escorting allied forces, and striking key installations. The PlayStation 2 controls are designed for immediate, arcade-style handling: players steer, accelerate and manoeuvre a selected aircraft while using a gun, standard lock-on missiles, and a plane-specific special weapon. The game lets aircraft carry far more ordnance than a literal simulation would, supporting long engagements and ambitious objectives, while selectable difficulty settings change the pressure created by enemy strength and damage.

Progression comes through mission results and earned credits. Successful flights unlock money for purchasing additional aircraft and their available special weapons, encouraging pilots to choose machines suited to air-to-air combat, ground attack, interception, or general-purpose work. The roster draws on real-world aircraft types, from fighters such as the F-16 Fighting Falcon and F-22 Raptor to specialised and support aircraft, alongside the series' fictional military technology. Aces hidden in missions offer another challenge, and downing them can unlock alternate paint schemes. For local competition, the PlayStation 2 release also includes a split-screen versus mode.

The story gradually carries ISAF from survival on North Point to a campaign to reclaim Usea. Its major threats include Erusea's Aegir Fleet, the captured Stonehenge railgun network that prevents safe air operations, and the Megalith installation at the centre of the finale. Mobius 1's clashes with the feared Yellow 13 give the campaign a personal aerial rivalry, while AWACS SkyEye supplies mission guidance. The mix of fictional nations, superweapons, and authentic-looking aircraft established a template that later Ace Combat games would continue to develop.

As a PAL-region PlayStation 2 release, Ace Combat: Distant Thunder differs in name from the North American Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies, but it presents the same central game and Continental War setting. The title marked a major technical and creative step for the series after its move to PlayStation 2 hardware: its mission-based flying, cinematic presentation, and original setting brought together the accessible action of an arcade flight game with a longer-form military campaign. For players exploring the early PlayStation 2 Ace Combat catalogue, it also sets the stage for later Strangereal-era games such as Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War.
