About
ObsCure is a survival-horror adventure from Hydravision Entertainment set over a single terrible night at Leafmore High School. Released for PlayStation 2 in Europe in 2004, the game turns the familiar rooms, locker areas and corridors of an American-style school into a maze of locked doors, unnerving clues and hostile creatures. When student Kenny Matthews disappears after hours, his friends begin searching for him and become trapped inside the campus. The investigation gradually exposes a long-running secret beneath the school, giving the game a teen-horror premise while keeping its focus on exploration, tension and survival.
The story is carried by five playable students: Josh Carter, Stan Jones, Kenny Matthews, Shannon Matthews and Ashley Thompson. Each has a small practical specialty that can help the group, such as spotting unfinished tasks, handling locks, recovering more effectively from healing items, solving puzzles or using weapons with greater skill. The campaign does not depend on a single character being alive, however. If someone dies, the remaining students can continue, changing the available team and lending consequences to dangerous encounters. This rotating cast also lets players choose which pair to take into the next stretch of Leafmore rather than treating every character as a mere companion.
Exploration follows the classic survival-horror rhythm of searching classrooms and service spaces, gathering supplies, finding keys and tools, and working through environmental puzzles. The school is not safe simply because an enemy is out of view: the creatures lurking there are tied to darkness, and light is a central part of the game's defense. Flashlights and sunlight can weaken the monsters, while conventional weapons provide the finishing force. One of ObsCure's most recognizable systems allows a flashlight to be combined with a firearm, so illumination and offense can travel together. That simple idea gives ordinary equipment a useful tactical role and makes batteries, lamps and bright openings valuable parts of the route through the school.
ObsCure supports a full local two-player cooperative campaign on PlayStation 2. A solo player travels with an AI-controlled partner, while two players can investigate Leafmore together on the same screen. Cooperative play changes the feel of its searches and fights: one student can keep a light on a threat while the other aims a weapon, and partners can divide attention between an approaching danger and the next puzzle clue. The game uses cinematic camera viewpoints but allows players to move through the environments freely, combining the presentation of an early-2000s horror game with the flexibility of a two-character team.
Although its cast deliberately draws on familiar school social types, ObsCure builds its mystery around disappearances, experiments and the frightening history of Leafmore High. The PlayStation 2 version is the original entry in a series that later continued with ObsCure II, also known in North America as ObsCure: The Aftermath. Hydravision's game remains notable for bringing local co-op, selectable survivors and light-based combat into a traditional survival-horror structure. For players looking for a PlayStation 2 horror game with puzzles, permanent character losses and a high-school monster-movie atmosphere, ObsCure offers a tense night-long investigation with a friend able to share the danger.
