About

SingStar Amped is a PlayStation 2 karaoke rhythm game developed by London Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It debuted in North America in September 2007, with later Australian and European releases. Part of Sony's long-running SingStar series, this entry turns its attention to rock: its disc contains 30 licensed songs spanning classic rock, alternative, punk, metal, and contemporary radio rock. It was sold as a standalone game and in a package with the series' two USB microphones.

The basic aim is to sing a selected song as accurately as possible. While the original music video plays, the screen displays the lyrics and a scrolling guide showing the pitches to aim for. Players sing into the microphones, and the game compares the timing and pitch of the performance with its musical targets to award points. A player need not reproduce an artist's voice; the challenge is to follow the melody and rhythm closely enough to build a score. This simple score-chasing structure makes every track both a karaoke performance and a repeatable rhythm-game round.

Amped supports the social format that defined the PlayStation 2 SingStar games. Two singers can take the microphones at once, either competing for the stronger score or sharing vocal duties when a song permits. Its party options also let larger groups take turns across a sequence of songs, with up to eight participants divided into teams. Individual song play offers a direct way to practise a favourite track, while the multiplayer rules turn the same material into a living-room contest. The focus is therefore less on an invented campaign than on selecting music, performing it, and returning to improve a result or settle a friendly rivalry.

The North American track list combines different eras and styles rather than limiting itself to one strain of rock. It includes Alice in Chains' "Would?", Audioslave's "Cochise", Blink-182's "I Miss You", David Bowie's "Changes", Foo Fighters' "Best of You", Nirvana's "Come as You Are", Pearl Jam's "Alive", Radiohead's "Creep", the Ramones' "Blitzkrieg Bop", and The Killers' "When You Were Young." Other selections reach from Blue Öyster Cult, Boston, Cheap Trick, Judas Priest, Motörhead, Poison, Quiet Riot, Steppenwolf, Talking Heads, Yes, and ZZ Top to acts associated with the 1990s and 2000s. The mixture gives the disc space for dramatic ballads, punchier punk songs, heavier riffs, and familiar sing-along choruses.

SingStar Amped is also a regional release with meaningful differences. Although the North American edition arrived in 2007, the Australian and European versions followed in 2008 and did not simply reuse every song. Localised editions replaced portions of the programme with tracks suited to their territories, so the exact catalogue depends on the disc's region; for example, Australian and German editions have songs not included in the North American release. That distinction matters when identifying the game, since the Amped name refers to a family of regional PS2 discs rather than one universally identical soundtrack.

Within the PS2 era of SingStar, Amped is best understood as a rock-oriented song collection built on the established microphone-and-pitch-scoring format. It does not require players to master a simulated instrument or learn a fictional story: the centrepiece is the licensed music video, the vocal guide, and the immediate feedback of the score display. For solo singers it supplies a set of rock standards and newer selections to revisit, while for groups it provides a structured way to share microphones, compare performances, and move from song to song. Its distinct identity comes from the breadth of its rock track lists and from the regional variations that accompanied its releases.
