About

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks for PlayStation 2 is a 2005 action-adventure spin-off from Midway that recasts the world of Mortal Kombat as a close-range brawler with exploration at its center. Developed by Midway Studios Los Angeles and published by Midway, it arrived in North America in September 2005, with PAL releases following that month. Instead of presenting a sequence of one-on-one tournament bouts, the game follows Shaolin warriors Liu Kang and Kung Lao through a 3D campaign built around the events and locations associated with the original Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II.

The story opens in the aftermath of Liu Kang's victory over Shang Tsung. When the sorcerer escapes to Outworld, Liu Kang and Kung Lao set out from the Wu Shi Academy to oppose the threat to Earthrealm. Their route carries them through familiar Mortal Kombat-inspired arenas and hostile territories, where Raiden and other allies guide the mission. Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, and a roster of recognizable fighters stand in their way, while appearances by characters such as Johnny Cage, Kitana, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Baraka, Goro, Reptile, and Mileena connect the adventure to the wider series.

Combat is designed for crowds rather than the fixed side-on format of the main fighting games. The monks can strike, throw, launch, and pursue enemies in any direction, allowing combos to move from one target to another. Liu Kang and Kung Lao retain individual special moves, and the campaign awards experience for combat that can be spent on upgrades. Players can improve abilities such as attacks and movement options, providing a sense of progression as the journey advances. The PlayStation 2 controls support direct melee action, evasive movement, jumping, and use of attacks suited to each monk.

The levels combine combat encounters with traversal, hidden areas, and environmental puzzles. Hazards and interactive scenery are part of the combat space: enemies can be sent into traps or off dangerous ledges, while destructible objects and other level features can reveal routes or secrets. The game also translates signature Mortal Kombat finishers to its adventure format. Building a combat meter makes Fatalities available, and additional finishing techniques include Multalities for multiple opponents and temporary Brutality-powered attacks. These elements give the campaign a distinctly Mortal Kombat identity even when several foes share the screen.

Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks supports a solo campaign as either Liu Kang or Kung Lao, as well as local cooperative play for two people. Co-op changes more than the number of fighters on screen: partners can work together on team attacks and can reach certain content that a lone player cannot access. A separate versus mode lets two players fight in selected arenas, preserving a competitive option alongside the adventure. Exploration also rewards attention with unlockable characters and extras; completing the story unlocks Scorpion and Sub-Zero for the campaign, while further collectibles expand the versus roster.

As a PS2-era experiment, Shaolin Monks sits apart from the series' traditional tournament fighters while deliberately borrowing their characters, moves, stages, and finishing traditions. Its retelling is not a strict reproduction of Mortal Kombat II, but a new action-adventure built from that period's conflict between Earthrealm and Outworld. The game was also released for Xbox, and its PlayStation 2 version later appeared in the Mortal Kombat Kollection compilation. For players exploring the franchise on PS2, it offers a campaign-focused interpretation of Mortal Kombat that emphasizes cooperative brawling, character upgrades, secrets, and environmental action.
