About
Ghost Rider for PlayStation 2 is a 2007 single-player action game from Climax and 2K Games, built around Marvel's supernatural antihero and released alongside the Ghost Rider film. It places stunt rider Johnny Blaze back in the role of Ghost Rider after the film's events, drawing on both the movie's world and the wider comic-book mythology. The PlayStation 2 version turns the character's flaming skull, leather-clad silhouette, and cursed motorcycle into a third-person adventure of close-quarters battles and high-speed Hell Cycle sequences.
The story gives Blaze another unwelcome task from Mephisto: demons have escaped Hell, and their rampage threatens to bring catastrophe to Earth. Johnny's refusal becomes harder to sustain when Roxanne is endangered, sending Ghost Rider across a tale written by comic creators Garth Ennis and Jimmy Palmiotti. The journey brings together figures and threats associated with the film and comics, including Vengeance, Lilith, Blackout, Deathwatch, and Scarecrow, while the Caretaker and Blade also enter the conflict.
On foot, Ghost Rider fights groups of enemies with punches, his Hellfire Chain, and the Hellfire Shotgun. Combat rewards variety and sustained attacks through a Vengeance meter, while a separate Spirit gauge supports special techniques. The Penance Stare, the character's signature punishment for the wicked, is part of his supernatural arsenal. Boss encounters punctuate the campaign and demand closer attention to enemy attacks than the regular battles.
Progression is tied to the essence collected from defeated foes. This resource can be spent on new moves, higher character statistics, and improvements for the Hell Cycle, giving the campaign a reason to expand the Rider's abilities as the opposition escalates. The game also includes unlockable material and bonus characters, with comics, artwork, making-of footage, and developer interviews among the extras tied to completion and advancement.
The Hell Cycle stages change the pace from arena combat to motorcycle action. Ghost Rider rides through hazards while attacking enemies with chain swings and hellfire, and the bike's otherworldly powers let it cross water, clear jumps, and pass beneath obstacles. These sections are woven into a campaign that visits locations associated with the film, such as Quentin Carnival and the Caretaker's Graveyard, as well as a vertical descent toward Hell.
Ghost Rider on PS2 is specifically the console edition developed by Climax Solent for 2K Games; it shares its 2007 release window and basic premise with PlayStation Portable and Game Boy Advance versions, but it should not be confused with the PSP release's separate Wi-Fi multiplayer racing mode. For PlayStation 2 players, the focus remains Johnny Blaze's solo pursuit of escaped demons through a combination of character-action combat, supernatural upgrades, and Hell Cycle riding.
