About
God Hand for PlayStation 2 is a 3D beat ’em up developed by Clover Studio and published by Capcom. It debuted in Japan in September 2006, reached North America that October, and arrived in PAL territories in early 2007. Directed by Shinji Mikami, the action game follows Gene, a tough drifter who loses an arm while protecting a young woman named Olivia. She replaces it with the legendary God Hand, placing Gene at the center of a struggle against demons who want that power for themselves.
The adventure is built around close-range fights viewed from behind Gene. Rather than relying on a fixed list of canned combos, players can arrange many acquired punches, kicks, and unusual techniques onto the controller’s face buttons to shape a personal attack string. A basic sequence can be adjusted as new moves are found or bought, while the Square button can be set to chain a chosen series. The right analog stick is devoted to directional evasions, making sidesteps, backflips, and ducks an essential response to incoming blows.
Gene’s divine arm provides a second layer to each confrontation. Successful attacks, evasions, taunts, and certain pickups feed the Tension Gauge; when enough energy has been built, he can remove the arm’s bracelet and briefly enter a more powerful God Hand state. Separate special attacks are prepared on the God Reel, a roulette-style menu that spends collected Roulette Orbs. These range from forceful single strikes to extravagant finishers, giving players a limited but potent answer for crowd control or difficult opponents.
God Hand also continually adjusts the pressure of battle through its Difficulty Level meter. Playing aggressively and avoiding punishment can raise the level, making enemies more forceful while improving the rewards earned at a stage’s end. Taking sustained damage lowers it, and an optional Grovel technique can reduce it as well. Enemies become more active as the setting rises, with later fights and higher levels demanding awareness of flanking attacks and groups rather than simple button presses.
The campaign moves Gene and Olivia through a deliberately offbeat world where Western motifs meet demons, martial arts, and broad visual comedy. Their principal opponents are the Four Devas, whose plans involve the Demon King Angra, while the journey introduces eccentric bosses and recurring enemies between combat encounters. Stages hide Technique Scrolls and other items, and the map screen includes a shop for buying or selling techniques and roulette moves. It also offers diversions such as card games, slot machines, chihuahua racing, and a fighting arena.
Clover Studio designed God Hand as a demanding hand-to-hand action game with a deliberately comic tone. The PlayStation 2 release has regional differences: for example, Japan’s Chihuahua Curry pickup became Puppy Pizza in English, while some move changes reflected localization and Japanese rating considerations. Completing the game unlocks Hard Mode, which starts the dynamic difficulty at its highest Die setting and prevents it from being lowered. God Hand was Clover Studio’s final game, making this standalone Capcom release a distinctive late-era PS2 action title.
