About

FIFA Street for PlayStation 2 is EA Canada’s 2005 arcade football game, published under the EA Sports BIG label. Rather than recreate a regulated stadium match, this FIFA spin-off turns its attention to small-sided street play: four-player teams, enclosed urban pitches, celebrated professionals and a style-first presentation. It launched in early 2005 and was also released for Xbox and Nintendo GameCube, while this PS2 version brings that first FIFA Street experience to Sony’s console.

Matches are built around keeping possession, finding space and beating a marker in close quarters. The left analogue stick moves the selected footballer, while the face buttons handle passing and shooting; the right analogue stick serves as the Trick Stick for executing skill moves. Players can string together flashy feints, flicks and dribbles before trying to open a route to goal. The compact 4-on-4 format makes individual confrontations a central part of every attack, so a successful move past a defender can be as useful as a pass.

FIFA Street deliberately steps away from much of the formal structure associated with FIFA’s full simulation games. Its focus is quick, expressive play in makeshift-looking city settings rather than conventional league football. The result is an arcade take on the sport in which control of the ball, tricks and one-on-one exchanges share the spotlight with scoring. Friendly games offer a direct way to choose sides and play, and the game also supports multiplayer competition.

The main single-player route is Rule the Street. Players create a footballer and assemble a side, then take part in pickup games and tournaments as they try to improve their standing. Progression unlocks further players and locations, creating a journey through ten street venues inspired by cities including New York, Amsterdam and Rio de Janeiro. Building a squad and earning access to new challenges gives the mode a longer-term objective beyond isolated exhibition matches.

The roster draws on real international stars from the era, including Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Thierry Henry and Wayne Rooney. Their presence connects the stylised street-football setting to the wider FIFA license, while the game’s emphasis remains on personality and individual technique rather than a detailed club-season simulation. Ronaldinho also appears on the North American cover, fitting the game’s concentration on flair and close control.

As the first entry in the FIFA Street series, FIFA Street established the series’ blend of licensed footballers, arcade rules and global street locations. It arrived alongside EA Sports BIG’s other Street games, including the NBA Street and NFL Street franchises, and was followed by FIFA Street 2 in 2006. For PlayStation 2 players, it remains a distinct early-2000s branch of FIFA built around small teams, inventive dribbling and street-game progression.
