About
Fate/stay night [Réalta Nua] for PlayStation 2 is a Japanese visual novel released in Japan on April 19, 2007. Developed for PS2 by HuneX and published by Kadokawa Shoten, it reworks TYPE-MOON’s 2004 Windows game into a console release rated for a wider audience. Réalta Nua, a title meaning “new stars,” retains the original dark-fantasy story while giving the long-form adventure a new presentation on Sony’s system.
The story follows Shirou Emiya, a high-school student and survivor of a devastating fire in Fuyuki City. After accidentally witnessing a battle between supernatural warriors, Shirou is drawn into the Fifth Holy Grail War: a contest in which mages called Masters summon heroic Servants and fight for a wish-granting Grail. His partnership with the sword-wielding Saber brings him into conflict with rival Masters, ancient heroes, and the dangerous secrets surrounding the war.
As a visual novel, Fate/stay night [Réalta Nua] is driven chiefly by reading dialogue, narration, and Shirou’s internal thoughts, with illustrated scenes, music, and dramatic effects carrying the action. At key moments, the player selects from choices that alter Shirou’s actions and can lead to different developments or bad ends. Failed choices do not simply end the experience; the Tiger Dojo hint segments offer guidance for another attempt, encouraging players to revisit decisions and uncover more of the narrative.
The PlayStation 2 game is built around three connected story routes: Fate, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven’s Feel. Each route casts the Holy Grail War in a different light, develops a different central heroine, and reveals new sides of Shirou, his allies, and his opponents. Progressing through the routes makes replay central to the design, since completing one path opens the next and the full story is distributed across their alternate perspectives.
Réalta Nua is specifically the console revision rather than the original adult PC edition. Its sexual material was removed or replaced to meet the PS2 release’s CERO C rating, while the port added full character voices using the cast associated with the 2006 television anime, new event artwork, and other audiovisual changes. The PS2 edition also introduced an additional ending sequence for the Fate route, rewarding players who have seen the story’s major paths.
This PS2 release is an important point in the history of Fate/stay night because it established the all-ages Réalta Nua form later used for Windows, PlayStation Vita, and mobile versions. Later editions added their own features, including new opening movies on Vita, so they should not be confused with this 2007 original console release. On PlayStation 2, the game remains a route-based fantasy drama where player choices guide Shirou through the Fifth Holy Grail War and toward its many possible conclusions.
