About
Ratchet: Gladiator PS2 is Insomniac Games' 2005 action shooter, published by Sony Computer Entertainment and known in North America as Ratchet: Deadlocked. It is the fourth main PlayStation 2 adventure in the Ratchet & Clank series, but it sends its heroes into a much harsher kind of spectacle. Ratchet, Clank and Big Al are seized by the forces behind DreadZone, a violent televised contest staged in the lawless Shadow Sector. With an explosive DeadLock collar enforcing his participation, Ratchet must survive the programme's missions while looking for a way to free the captives and bring its owner, Gleeman Vox, down.
The PS2 game retains the series' third-person perspective, its arsenal of imaginative weaponry and its constant supply of bolts, but it places combat at the centre of the campaign. DreadZone challenges send Ratchet through arenas, hostile planets and industrial installations packed with enemies, objectives and traps. Missions can involve clearing combat zones, defending positions, disabling targets, completing timed runs or making use of armed vehicles. This emphasis gives Ratchet: Gladiator a more tournament-driven rhythm than the earlier platform-focused entries, while still leaving room for traversal, exploration and the series' characteristically elaborate gadgets.
Ratchet is accompanied for much of the story by two combat bots, Merc and Green. They add firepower and, when instructed, can take on practical tasks such as hacking, planting explosives and operating mission devices. Their equipment and appearance can be improved as the campaign advances, making the bot team an important part of both combat and progression. Clank is not controlled in his usual on-foot or jetpack roles here; instead, he supports the team as mission engineer over their communications link, while Big Al provides technical help from the DreadZone station.
Weapons grow more flexible through the game's modification system. Bolts earned from combat, crates and completed objectives can be spent on weapons, ammunition and upgrades, and weapons become stronger through use. Alpha and Omega modifications expand an armament's possibilities in different ways, improving attributes or adding effects to attacks. Ratchet also earns DreadPoints from events, which affect progression through the DreadZone contest and help open the route to further challenges. After the main story, Challenge Mode gives returning players a chance to continue developing gear and tackle the campaign with its additional progression opportunities.
Local cooperative play is one of Ratchet: Gladiator's defining PS2 features. A second player can join the story campaign, taking over the role normally filled by the bot support and working alongside Ratchet through the same missions. The arrangement changes how the team functions: players share the available weapons and ammunition, so cooperation matters as much as individual firepower. The game also includes competitive multiplayer options, extending its arena-oriented design beyond the single-player story with modes built around combat and territorial objectives.
The story carries Ratchet from DreadZone's contests toward a confrontation with Vox and his elite competitors, including the programme's celebrated combatant Ace Hardlight. Its reality-show premise provides a darker sci-fi frame for the series' familiar banter and weapon experimentation, while the Shadow Sector supplies the setting for its succession of televised battles. As Ratchet: Gladiator in Europe and Australia, and Ratchet: Deadlocked in North America, this PS2 entry stands as a distinct branch of the early series: an action-heavy campaign built around customisable guns, dependable robotic partners and cooperative survival against DreadZone's manufactured entertainment.
