About
Backyard Baseball is the PlayStation 2 edition of Humongous Entertainment’s cartoon baseball game, published in North America by Atari on March 23, 2004. It is a home-console port of the 2003 GameCube release, presenting the Backyard Sports series’ sandlot premise with 3D players and fields rather than treating professional baseball as a straight simulation. The game is built around child-friendly rules, exaggerated action and a fictional backyard league, while retaining the basic rhythm of taking turns at bat and in the field.
Players assemble a nine-player club from the familiar Backyard Kids and licensed Major League Baseball stars redrawn as children. The pro roster includes names such as Alex Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa, Albert Pujols, Dontrelle Willis, Ichiro, Alfonso Soriano, Nomar Garciaparra and Carlos Delgado, with further pros available as unlocks; classic Backyard characters such as Pablo Sanchez are part of the mix as well. This lets a roster combine fictional kids with real-player caricatures, and the MLB license brings all 30 major-league teams and their logos into the game.
At the plate, each batter can be set to line drive, bunt, power or grounder before swinging. The player moves a red Swing Spot in the strike zone and can alter the batting stance, making contact and pitch location more important than simply pressing a swing button. Base runners can be sent forward, recalled, led off or instructed to steal, so a hit also creates decisions about advancing runners and risking an out.
Pitching uses four selectable pitches—heat, curveball, change-up and screwball—and a blue target for placing the ball. Pitchers can try pickoff throws to the bases, turn the pitch-location aid on or off, and spend earned pitching power-ups. Batting power-ups are likewise available when earned, giving the arcade-style game its wildest momentum shifts without discarding the normal at-bat controls.
Defense is active rather than automatic. A button selects the fielder nearest the ball, the left stick moves that player, and separate commands attempt jumping or diving catches. The right stick directs throws to first, second, third or home, while defensive positioning can be adjusted for the infield and outfield. Those tools make catches, force plays and relay throws part of the hands-on contest.
Pick-Up Game supports one or two players in a six- or nine-inning match, with choices including the teams, field, difficulty and whether to use power-ups. Season Play is a solo campaign in which a coach guides a team through an 18- or 32-game schedule toward the Backyard Baseball World Series. The PlayStation 2 release also offers practice with Mr. Clanky’s Coaching Box tutorial plus hitting and fielding drills, and it includes Home Run Derby and Fielders’ Challenge mini-games; multiplayer mini-games use hot-seat play for up to eight participants.
As a PS2 release, Backyard Baseball uses the DualShock 2 controller’s face buttons, analog sticks and optional vibration to map batting, pitching, baserunning and fielding to distinct inputs. With a compatible memory card in slot 1, it automatically saves Season Play progress, settings and unlocked extras, while the Hall of Fame tracks championship trophies, records and collectible goodies. The result is a console-focused Backyard Baseball entry that balances recognizable MLB branding, create-and-draft team play and approachable arcade baseball.
