About
Enter the Matrix for PlayStation 2 is a 2003 action-adventure game developed by Shiny Entertainment and published under the Atari name. Released in North America in May 2003 alongside The Matrix Reloaded, it tells a parallel story within the film trilogy rather than simply retelling the movie. The PS2 game places players in the roles of Niobe, captain of the hovercraft Logos, or Ghost, its first mate and weapons specialist, as the crew joins the resistance effort to defend Zion.
The main campaign is played from a third-person perspective and blends hand-to-hand fighting, firearms, platforming, and mission-based objectives. Niobe and Ghost can run, jump, climb, use cover, and engage police, security forces, Agents, and other opponents across locations inside and outside the simulated world. Each character follows the same wider conflict but encounters some different scenes and missions, encouraging a second playthrough to see the other side of the Logos crew’s story.
A key mechanic is Focus, the game’s slow-motion ability. Activating it gives the player extra time to dodge gunfire, line up shots, and perform acrobatic moves that evoke the series’ stylized action. Combat alternates between armed encounters and close-quarters fights, while certain sequences change the pace with vehicle driving or hovercraft missions. Niobe’s role as a pilot and Ghost’s emphasis on weaponry are reflected in several of these situations, although both characters participate in the on-foot action.
Enter the Matrix connects directly to the events surrounding The Matrix Reloaded. Niobe and Ghost retrieve intelligence left by the destroyed Osiris, then work to warn Zion and support other rebel crews as the machine threat closes in. Their path brings them into contact with familiar figures including Morpheus, Trinity, Neo, the Oracle, the Keymaker, and Agent Smith, while also expanding the roles of the Logos crew and other resistance members. The plot moves between Matrix locations, Zion-related operations, and the dangerous world beyond the simulation.
One of the game’s defining features is its live-action material created specifically for the project. The Wachowskis wrote and directed new footage with members of the film cast, and those scenes were designed to make the game part of the larger Matrix narrative. This approach distinguished Enter the Matrix from a conventional licensed adaptation: its story supplies events and character perspectives that run alongside the second film. The PS2 version was one of several 2003 releases, alongside editions for Xbox, GameCube, and Windows.
The PlayStation 2 release is primarily a single-player experience, with the two protagonists offering the central route through the story. It also includes a computer-terminal-style hacking feature through which players can enter codes to access extra options, secrets, and a two-player versus mode. As the first video game based on The Matrix film series, Enter the Matrix is closely tied to the early-2000s expansion of the franchise across films, animation, and interactive media, and it was followed by The Matrix: Path of Neo in 2005.
