About
Scooby-Doo! First Frights for PlayStation 2 is a 2009 action-platform game from Torus Games and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. Released in North America on September 22, 2009, it brings Mystery Inc. into a cartoon-styled 3D adventure built around exploration, combat, light puzzles, and the gang's familiar unmask-the-culprit formula. The PS2 game arrived alongside the DVD release of the live-action prequel Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins, but tells its own series of supernatural-looking cases for Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, and Velma to investigate.
The adventure is divided into four episodic mysteries and 22 levels. A food festival at Keystone Castle gives Scooby and Shaggy a reason to hurry toward the destination, while the rest of the gang continually finds another emergency that needs solving first. Their cases lead from a haunted school talent show to a closed amusement park and toy factory, then on to Rocky Bay and a castle with a troubling family legend. Each chapter turns the group loose in places full of monsters, hazards, breakable objects, and secrets, before the players assemble clues and identify the person behind the scare.
Scooby-Doo! First Frights makes the five members of Mystery Inc. practical parts of the platforming. Scooby can fight with his sausage string and crawl through vents, while Shaggy uses a slingshot and a yo-yo for grappling. Velma throws books and operates certain machinery; Daphne can climb poles and use a flying kick; and Fred can move heavy crates, turn handwheels, and use stun bombs. Stages assign characters to the action, so progress depends on noticing which hero can open a route, reach a collectible, or solve an environmental obstacle. Blocking, simple attacks, jumping, and the characters' special skills keep the game moving between clue locations.
The PlayStation 2 version also supports two players locally in split-screen cooperative play. A partner can join the mystery-solving and combat rather than simply watching, which suits a game centered on a group of friends. Story Mode moves through the main cases with their designated characters, while Explore Mode lets players revisit completed levels with unlocked characters to search for items missed on the first trip. That replay structure is important because some collectibles and routes become available only when the appropriate ability is in hand.
Costumes add another layer to the gang's progression. Every main character has episode-themed outfits, and additional rewards can be earned through play; costume changes can provide different weapons or abilities. The game also tracks trophies and monster-mask rewards connected to objectives, while the end of each episode asks the player to choose the suspect from the evidence gathered. Those choices give the cartoon mystery premise a direct role in the format instead of treating the villains only as bosses to defeat.
On PS2, First Frights is a late-generation licensed platform adventure with a third-person perspective, simple puzzle elements, and an accessible cooperative focus. Its large cast of voiced characters includes longtime Scooby-Doo performers such as Frank Welker, Mindy Cohn, Grey DeLisle-Griffin, and Scott Innes. The game was followed by Scooby-Doo! and the Spooky Swamp in 2010, making First Frights the opening entry in this pair of Torus-developed Mystery Inc. console adventures. For players looking for a Scooby-Doo PlayStation 2 game that lets the whole gang participate, its mix of episodes, character abilities, collectables, and local co-op defines the experience.
