About

Second Sight for PlayStation 2 is a science-fiction action-adventure game from Free Radical Design, published by Codemasters in 2004. It follows John Vattic, an American parapsychology researcher who wakes inside a high-security medical facility with no memory of the events that brought him there. He does know that he has extraordinary psychic abilities, and escaping the facility begins a search for his identity, his missing colleagues, and the truth behind a secret military operation. The PlayStation 2 game combines third-person shooting, stealth, exploration, and supernatural powers in a story that moves between apparent present-day events and missions from six months earlier.

Most of Second Sight is played from a third-person view, with the option to use a first-person perspective in suitable situations. John works through self-contained locations by completing objectives, finding routes forward, and dealing with guards, soldiers, scientists, and security systems. Direct combat is one answer: pistols, submachine guns, shotguns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, and other weapons appear as the operation broadens. The PS2 controls also support cover-based firefights and targeted shooting, while close quarters can call for unarmed attacks. But ammunition and alarms are only part of the problem, so the game regularly gives players reasons to study a room before rushing into it.

Stealth is a central alternative to open gunplay. John can crouch, use cover and hiding places, watch patrol patterns, and employ a silenced tranquilizer weapon when one is available. Being seen by a guard or camera can raise an alarm and draw additional enemies into the area; breaking line of sight and staying concealed gives the situation a chance to settle. This makes the individual missions flexible in practice. A careful route can avoid a confrontation, while an aggressive one can turn the same kind of space into a firefight, and psychic abilities can create further solutions when neither approach is enough on its own.

Those abilities give Second Sight its distinctive identity. John gradually recovers and expands his psionic repertoire as the campaign progresses, spending psychic energy to use powers that can damage enemies, restore health, manipulate objects, distract opponents, or reach otherwise inaccessible places. Telekinesis can move or hurl objects, while other powers support deception, remote interaction, or combat. Psychic energy is a resource rather than an unlimited shortcut; emptying it leaves John briefly vulnerable. The result is a mixture of practical tools and attacks that can be applied to combat, stealth, environmental obstacles, and light puzzle-solving instead of serving only as visual effects.

The story begins with John’s escape from the Virginia facility, then unfolds alongside missions involving WinterICE, a U.S. military taskforce sent to Siberia to locate Russian scientist Victor Grienko. John’s memories and visions introduce fellow operatives including Colonel Joshua Starke and psychic adviser Jayne Wilde, while a larger conspiracy connects Grienko’s research to a national-security organization. Settings range from laboratories and government buildings to urban locations, an asylum, and the Siberian operation. The narrative deliberately withholds context as John gains abilities and recalls events, making the campaign’s changing timeline part of its mystery rather than simply a backdrop for the action.

Released for PlayStation 2 alongside GameCube and Xbox versions in 2004, with Windows following in 2005, Second Sight arrived from the studio known for the TimeSplitters series. Its single-player PS2 campaign emphasizes an unusual blend of espionage-style infiltration, conventional weapons, and psionic experimentation. For players exploring the PlayStation 2 library, it remains a standalone Free Radical Design game built around choosing how John Vattic handles danger while uncovering the forces that shaped his powers.
