About

Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix is the expanded PlayStation 2 edition of the original Kingdom Hearts, developed and published by Square (the company now known as Square Enix). It was released in Japan on December 26, 2002, after the original Japanese version and the overseas editions. The PS2 Final Mix itself was a Japan-only release, making it distinct from the later HD collections that finally brought this version’s content to audiences outside Japan.

The adventure begins when a storm of Heartless consumes Sora’s home, Destiny Islands, and separates him from his friends Riku and Kairi. Chosen to wield the Keyblade, Sora joins Donald Duck and Goofy on a search for their missing friends and King Mickey. Their journey is also a mission to seal the Keyholes of threatened worlds before the Heartless can devour them.

Its worlds combine original Kingdom Hearts locations with Disney settings and characters. Sora visits places inspired by Alice in Wonderland, Tarzan, Aladdin, Hercules, The Little Mermaid, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Peter Pan and more, while Traverse Town and Hollow Bastion connect the wider conflict. Final Fantasy guests such as Leon, Aerith, Yuffie, Cloud and Sephiroth appear alongside the Disney cast, but the story remains centered on Sora, his friends and the mystery of Kingdom Hearts.

Combat is a real-time action RPG system viewed from a third-person perspective. Players directly control Sora’s Keyblade attacks, magic, items and context-sensitive commands while Donald and Goofy fight as AI-controlled party members whose behavior can be adjusted. Experience levels, equipment, abilities, magic management, summons and optional boss encounters add traditional role-playing depth to the rapid battles.

The Gummi Ship links the separate worlds through space-travel stages with rail-shooter action and a customizable craft. Between story missions, players can explore for synthesis materials, collect Dalmatians for rewards, enter Olympus Coliseum tournaments and challenge optional enemies. The game’s world-specific transformations also change how the party moves and fights, including underwater forms in Atlantica and flight in Neverland.

Final Mix incorporates the additions first made for the international releases, including the Sephiroth and Kurt Zisa optional battles, then adds further material of its own. New enemies, weapons, abilities, items, balance adjustments, cutscenes and an additional secret boss broaden the original game and point more directly toward the series’ future. The PS2 release uses English voice acting with Japanese text and subtitles, whereas later HD remasters are updated re-releases rather than the original 2002 disc.
