About
Kingdom Hearts II is a 2006 action role-playing game for PlayStation 2, developed and published by Square Enix. It is the direct numbered sequel to Kingdom Hearts and follows the events of Chain of Memories, blending an original fantasy story with Disney settings and characters alongside guests from Square Enix's Final Fantasy series. The original North American PS2 release arrived on March 28, 2006.
The adventure opens in Twilight Town with Roxas, a boy whose strange dreams and fading summer holiday set the story in motion. Sora then awakens after a year of sleep and resumes his journey with Donald Duck and Goofy. Their goal is to find Riku and King Mickey, protect the connected worlds from Heartless and Nobodies, and confront Organization XIII, whose pursuit of Kingdom Hearts drives the central conflict.
Sora travels between distinct Disney-inspired worlds aboard the Gummi Ship, meeting familiar characters and taking on stories shaped around films such as Mulan, The Lion King, Pirates of the Caribbean, TRON, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. These visits balance local crises with the larger mystery around Sora, Roxas, Riku, Kairi, and Organization XIII, while Hollow Bastion and Twilight Town serve as recurring hubs for the main plot.
Combat is real-time and menu-driven: the player controls Sora's Keyblade attacks, magic, items, movement, and equipped abilities while party companions fight alongside him. The command menu remains at the lower left, but battles move at a brisker pace than the first game, with air combos, evasive options, magic, summons, and Keyblade-specific abilities offering ways to adapt to crowds and bosses. Donald and Goofy are regular companions, and world-specific allies can join the party in many locations.
A defining system is the Drive Gauge. By spending Drive points, Sora can enter Drive Forms that change his combat style and grant different strengths, such as Valor Form's physical focus and Wisdom Form's magic and ranged attacks. Forms level up through their own conditions and unlock movement or combat abilities that can also be equipped outside the transformation, giving optional battles and exploration a clear role in character progression. Fusion with a party member means that companion temporarily leaves the active party while the form is in use.
Reaction Commands add context-sensitive actions to battle. When an enemy, boss, or situation creates an opening, a prompt lets Sora perform a special move that can counter an attack, exploit a foe, or advance a cinematic sequence. This system is used alongside standard combos rather than replacing them, so encounters can shift between familiar action-RPG control and set-piece responses tailored to specific opponents.
Travel and side activities extend beyond the story route. The Gummi Ship is both transportation and the basis for Gummi Missions, score-focused flying stages with customizable ship construction. Synthesis, treasure chests, optional tournaments at Olympus Coliseum, puzzles, and repeated world visits supply materials, equipment, abilities, and extra challenges. The original PS2 version should not be confused with Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, an expanded Japanese release from 2007, or the later HD remastered version included in Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix; those editions add or alter content beyond this 2006 PS2 release.
