About

Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance II PS2 is a 2004 action role-playing game developed by Black Isle Studios and published by Interplay Entertainment. A direct sequel to the 2001 console-focused Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, it returns to the Forgotten Realms setting of Dungeons & Dragons and puts a new group of adventurers in danger around the Sword Coast city of Baldur's Gate. The original PlayStation 2 release arrived alongside an Xbox version, but this is the PS2 edition: a real-time, controller-driven dungeon adventure viewed from a high three-quarter perspective rather than the party-based computer RPG style associated with earlier Baldur's Gate games.

The opening follows the disappearance of the first game's heroes after their journey through the Onyx Tower. Five strangers converge near the city as attacks on the Trade Way and trouble in the surrounding settlements point to a wider threat. Players select one hero for an entire campaign: Dorn Redbear, a human barbarian; Vhaidra Uoswiir, a drow monk; Ysuran Auondril, a moon-elf necromancer; Borador Goldhand, a dwarven rogue; or Allessia Faithhammer, a human cleric. Their class, combat approach, spells and personal motives give the same central quest a different character depending on who leads it.

Action unfolds in real time. The left analog stick moves the hero through streets, forests, ruins and hostile interiors, while face-button attacks, assigned feats and spells handle close combat and special abilities. A rotating camera and selectable map views help keep the route visible as enemies close in. Combat rewards experience and loot, and level gains let players invest in each character's available spells and feats. The result mixes immediate hack-and-slash encounters with RPG decisions about how to improve a build, whether it is a weapon-focused fighter, a spellcaster or a more defensive support character.

Baldur's Gate itself serves as a hub for conversations, quests and shopping, while the adventure branches outward through mandatory objectives and optional areas. Non-player characters introduce investigations, rescues and leads, and the quest journal tracks current work. The campaign begins with raids by the Red Fang Marauders, then expands into a struggle involving the Zhentarim, the fate of the earlier protagonists and the forces gathering around the Onyx Tower. Its fantasy journey moves between urban intrigue, monster-filled routes and more unusual planes, always keeping the larger danger to the city in view.

A major addition over the first Dark Alliance is item creation. Weapons, armor and trinkets can be enhanced at a workshop with runestones and gems, allowing equipment to be tailored with effects beyond its basic properties. Treasure, shop stock and increasingly powerful gear support the loop of exploring, fighting and returning better prepared. The game also offers Easy, Normal and Hard difficulty choices, while its Extreme setting opens after a completion and uses an imported character. Completing the game can unlock Drizzt Do'Urden, and conquering Extreme unlocks Artemis Entreri, giving determined players additional ways to revisit the story.

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II on PlayStation 2 supports both a solo campaign and local two-player cooperative play on one screen. Co-op partners choose from the same five heroes, share the journey and pool collected treasure, while the shared camera naturally keeps them near one another. That straightforward cooperative structure, five distinct preset characters and the crafting system define this sequel's identity. Later versions for modern systems appeared in 2022, but the PS2 original remains the 2004 Black Isle action-RPG continuation built around local console play, character progression and saving Baldur's Gate from another looming supernatural crisis.
