About
Adventures of Lolo for the NES is a single-player puzzle game from HAL Laboratory, released in North America in 1989. It stars Lolo, a small round hero who enters the castle of King Egger to rescue Princess Lala. Rather than sending the player through scrolling action stages, the game presents a succession of compact, self-contained rooms. Each one is a logic challenge in which every move can change the route ahead, giving this Nintendo Entertainment System adventure its deliberate, methodical character.
The basic goal in each room is to collect every Heart Frame. Doing so opens a treasure chest containing the jewel that reveals the exit, allowing Lolo to proceed through Egger's castle. The 50 rooms are arranged across 10 floors, and their layouts gradually demand more planning. Water, fixed walls, movable blocks, narrow corridors, and enemy positions turn a simple trip to the exit into a puzzle about order: taking a heart or pushing a block at the wrong moment can close off the solution.
Lolo is controlled with the NES directional pad, but movement alone is not enough. Some heart rewards give him a limited special ability for that screen. He can fire magic shots that temporarily turn certain enemies into eggs, then push those eggs into useful positions, including across water. Other rooms provide powers such as breaking a rock or creating a bridge. These tools make enemies and obstacles part of the puzzle board, yet their uses are limited, so success depends on recognizing how each item fits the room's intended route.
The castle is populated by distinct creatures with different behaviors. Some stand as obstacles, while others move, pursue Lolo, or attack along clear horizontal or vertical lines. Several become more dangerous after the hearts have been collected, when the final dash for the chest and exit begins. Contact with particular enemies or being hit costs a life, but the game also lets the player restart a room, making experimentation a practical part of solving its increasingly intricate designs.
This NES Adventures of Lolo is part of HAL Laboratory's Eggerland series and is not the similarly named 1994 Game Boy game. Its NES puzzle selection was assembled from earlier Japanese Eggerland material, while the familiar Lolo and Lala characters later appeared in HAL's Kirby series as Lololo and Lalala. The original game led to Adventures of Lolo 2 and Adventures of Lolo 3 on NES, but it remains a focused introduction to the series: fifty screen-sized puzzles built around planning, enemy timing, and clever use of a small set of tools.
