About
Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure for Nintendo DS is a single-player musical role-playing game developed by Nippon Ichi Software and released in North America by NIS America on September 23, 2008. It revisits the first adventure in the Marl Kingdom series, originally created for PlayStation, in a handheld remake built around a fairy-tale world, character songs, and an approachable RPG structure. Its Nintendo DS release preserves the story of Cornet Espoir while reshaping its combat for the system.
Cornet is a young girl with an unusual gift: by playing her horn, she can communicate with and bring puppets to life. Accompanied by Kururu, her outspoken puppet friend, she meets Prince Ferdinand and quickly finds herself caught up in a crisis when the witch Marjoly turns him to stone. Cornet’s journey across Marl Kingdom becomes a quest to reach the prince, confront Marjoly and her followers, and recruit allies along the way. The cheerful fantasy premise makes room for comedy as well as the game’s romantic rescue story.
Exploration connects towns, castles, and other locations through a world map, with random encounters leading into battles. Unlike the PlayStation original’s strategy-style battlefields, the Nintendo DS version uses a more direct 2D, turn-based battle format. Players choose commands for their party, attack enemies, use skills and items, and build their characters through the experience awarded after each victory. The DS controls support menu selections with the buttons or stylus, keeping navigation and combat suited to the handheld’s two-input design.
Puppets are central to both the story and the party system. Cornet’s horn lets her call on puppet companions, while defeated monsters can sometimes join her side as additional battle options. The DS remake also makes Kururu playable in combat, a notable change from the original game. Characters have their own abilities as they develop, and enemy elemental affinities add another consideration when choosing attacks. These mechanics give the adventure a conventional RPG foundation beneath its theatrical presentation.
Music is Rhapsody’s defining feature. Rather than treating songs as a separate minigame, the adventure incorporates sung sequences into its storytelling, supporting its musical-RPG identity and its animated, storybook atmosphere. The Nintendo DS edition was announced by NIS America as a one-player musical RPG and arrived alongside other DS releases in 2008. Its North American version brings the main campaign to the handheld, though NIS America later confirmed that post-game chapters present in the Japanese DS release were not included.
For Nintendo DS players, Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure offers a compact entry into Nippon Ichi Software’s Marl Kingdom setting, with Cornet, Kururu, Ferdinand, and Marjoly establishing the characters and world that the series continued to explore. The remake is especially distinct from the PlayStation version because of its streamlined battle design and Kururu’s expanded role. Its mix of turn-based RPG progress, puppet companions, fantasy comedy, and vocal story scenes gives this DS release a character all its own.
