About

Ace Attorney Investigations Miles Edgeworth Nintendo DS is Capcom's crime-solving adventure starring the series' familiar prosecutor rather than its usual defense attorneys. Developed and published by Capcom, it debuted in Japan in 2009 as Gyakuten Kenji and reached North America on February 16, 2010, followed by Europe and Australia that month. Set between Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations and Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, this standalone-friendly spin-off shifts the action out of the courtroom and places Miles Edgeworth at the center of five connected investigations.

Instead of presenting a case primarily through trials, the Nintendo DS game lets players move Edgeworth around crime scenes from a third-person view. He can speak with witnesses and suspects, inspect scenery, and add important details and physical evidence to his organizer. Movement supports either the D-pad and buttons or touch-screen input, while close examination can call for rotating objects and checking details that may have escaped an initial look. Each location becomes a small investigative space in which observations, conversation, and evidence gradually reveal what happened.

Edgeworth's Logic system is the game's defining new tool. Facts he notices are stored as thoughts, and the player pairs related ideas to form deductions that open fresh leads. The game also uses the Little Thief device to recreate locations as holographic simulations; revisiting those reconstructions can expose discrepancies or details unavailable in the original scene. These systems complement, rather than replace, the series' familiar evidence-based reasoning. During rebuttals, characters offer their version of events, and the player presses statements for more information or presents the appropriate evidence to expose a contradiction. Incorrect deductions, evidence, or accusations drain a truth meter, creating a cost for forcing an answer.

The five episodes form one larger mystery involving an international smuggling operation, while still giving each investigation its own crime, setting, and cast. Edgeworth is joined by Detective Dick Gumshoe and new partner Kay Faraday, a self-proclaimed great thief connected to the Yatagarasu legend. Other recurring Ace Attorney figures, including Franziska von Karma and Ema Skye, appear alongside rivals such as Interpol agent Shi-Long Lang. That mix gives the game room for the series' eccentric witnesses and comic exchanges while following Edgeworth's more deliberate pursuit of the facts behind every incident.

As the first Ace Attorney game to make Miles Edgeworth its central character, Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth was designed around seeing how a veteran prosecutor thinks and works away from court. Producer Motohide Eshiro and creative director Takeshi Yamazaki framed it as a crime-scene-focused counterpart to the mainline games, with direct character control and Logic Mode giving the DS entry its own identity. It is the first Investigations game, not its 2011 sequel, Ace Attorney Investigations 2: Prosecutor's Gambit; both later appeared together in the 2024 Ace Attorney Investigations Collection. The original Nintendo DS release remains the starting point for this branch of the Ace Attorney series and its investigation-led take on courtroom mystery storytelling.
