About
Twilight Syndrome : Kinjirareta Toshi Densetsu for Nintendo DS is a Japanese horror adventure released by Spike on July 24, 2008. Developed by XAX Entertainment, it is a new, self-contained entry in the long-running Twilight Syndrome series rather than a conversion of the 1996 PlayStation releases or the 2000 game Twilight Syndrome: Saikai. The game keeps the series' focus on school-age investigators, supernatural rumors, and unsettling everyday locations, while building its story around the then-familiar anxiety of anonymous mobile-phone chain mail.
The story begins when Mizuki transfers to Kirizuka High School in Tokyo. A sender calling themself Nanashi circulates messages tied to urban legends, and the rumors take on frightening weight after students Kana and Megumi disappear. A classmate, Arisa, is found collapsed in a park with no memory of what happened. Mizuki receives a direct message asking her to come to the roof, where she meets Riko, another recipient. After finding Megumi's phone, they seek out Reika, the person she appears to have called last, and the three girls begin following the clues behind Nanashi's messages.
As an adventure game, Twilight Syndrome : Kinjirareta Toshi Densetsu combines side-scrolling exploration with investigation and dialogue-led story scenes. Players examine locations, track down leads, and use the Nintendo DS touch screen for Touch Actions that reveal clues or let them interact with objects. The touch controls are also used for moments rooted in the game's urban-legend premise, including a coin-moving ritual. A returning heart-rate meter signals rising tension, while player choices influence the route through the narrative and can lead to multiple endings, giving failed investigations and alternate outcomes a place in the structure.
The three leads bring different perspectives to the mystery. Mizuki is an outgoing newcomer who decides to pursue the disappearances; Riko is curious about urban legends despite lacking spiritual sensitivity; and Reika is quiet, initially remote, and more attuned to paranormal phenomena. Their investigation moves through a school and other familiar spaces as individual incidents and relationships complicate the central case. Key scenes use photographed live-action performances by Mami Ueno as Mizuki, Yuri Hori as Riko, and Suzuka Shihono as Reika, an approach that adds a deliberately grounded visual contrast to the text and game graphics.
Horror filmmaker and screenwriter Osamu Fukutani participated as both director and scenario writer, helping make this an original chapter with its own cast and plot. The DS installment also preserves the franchise's emphasis on sound: its audio production used three-dimensional sound work, designed to make close voices and effects more spatial when heard through headphones. These features, alongside the mobile-phone investigation theme and touch-screen clue hunting, distinguish Twilight Syndrome : Kinjirareta Toshi Densetsu from the earlier Human Entertainment-era games while retaining the series' blend of urban legends, branching adventure storytelling, and Japanese school horror.
