About

Radiant Historia Nintendo DS is a single-player fantasy role-playing game developed by Atlus with Headlock and published by Atlus. It debuted in Japan in November 2010 and reached North America on February 22, 2011. The original Nintendo DS release follows Stocke, a special-intelligence agent in a continent-wide conflict, and builds its adventure around a rare chance to revisit decisive moments in history. Its later Nintendo 3DS remake, Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology, is a separate expanded version; this is the original dual-screen DS game.

The story takes place on Vainqueur, a continent being swallowed by desertification while the military powers of Alistel and Granorg wage war. After an escort mission collapses, Stocke is entrusted with the White Chronicle, a mysterious book that opens a path to Historia, a space outside ordinary time. There he meets the book's keepers and gains the ability to return to key points in the past. The mission is no longer merely to survive the opening disaster: Stocke must identify the choices that can keep Vainqueur from being lost.

The White Chronicle is both the center of the plot and the game's route map. Major decisions send Stocke down two principal histories, with smaller branches, dead ends, and alternative outcomes recorded as nodes in the book. A clue, skill, or item gained while serving one side of the story can make progress possible in the other, so revisiting earlier moments has a practical purpose beyond seeing a different scene. Experience and money earned in battles persist when Stocke moves between timelines, making experimentation less punishing and tying character growth to the search for the correct course of events.

Radiant Historia explores towns, forests, ruins, and battlefields from a top-down view. Visible enemies can be struck with Stocke's sword to gain an advantage before combat, bypassed where space allows, or later avoided with a cloaking ability. Exploration also includes treasures, breakable objects, and simple environmental obstacles such as movable boxes. Stocke travels with a changing group that includes the mercenaries Raynie and Marco, his fellow soldier Rosch, the Beastkind shaman Aht, and the warrior Gafka, while encounters with Granorg's Princess Eruca reveal how closely the rival nations' fates are connected.

Combat gives the traditional turn-based party RPG a tactical twist. Three player characters face enemies arranged on a three-by-three grid, and attacks can shove opponents between spaces. Positioning matters: enemies can be driven into traps or compressed into one square so a single strike damages the whole cluster. The battle order can also be manipulated with the Change command, allowing a combatant to swap places in the action queue and set up longer combinations. Building a chain of allied attacks produces stronger sequences, but moving turns around requires care because the shifted unit becomes more vulnerable before it acts.

The Nintendo DS hardware divides the battle view and turn order across its two screens, while the game's pixel-art field scenes and character portraits carry its war-torn fantasy setting. Director Mitsuru Hirata led a team whose contributors included creator and scenario concept designer Satoshi Takayashiki and character designer Hiroshi Konishi; Yoko Shimomura composed the music. Rather than presenting its branching structure as dozens of unrelated campaigns, Radiant Historia Nintendo DS uses its two histories to examine the consequences of duty, loyalty, political ambition, and intervention. Completing events across the available paths opens the fullest conclusion, giving its time-travel premise a clear gameplay goal as well as a narrative one.
