About

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice for All for Nintendo DS is Capcom's courtroom adventure and the second main entry in the Ace Attorney series. The English-language DS release arrived in North America in January 2007, following a 2006 Japanese DS edition of the 2002 Game Boy Advance game, and puts defense attorney Phoenix Wright back in the position of proving seemingly doomed clients innocent. It is a single-player, text-driven mystery game built around dramatic trials, comic character encounters, and the careful reconstruction of criminal cases.

Justice for All unfolds through four cases, with new episodes opening as earlier ones are cleared. Each case alternates between investigation segments and courtroom sessions. Away from court, Phoenix visits available locations, speaks with witnesses and acquaintances, inspects scenery for clues, and adds evidence and profiles to his Court Record. The aim is not simply to collect every object: progress depends on asking the right questions and presenting the relevant item or person when a character is withholding information.

The DS game’s trials turn that evidence into a series of cross-examinations. Players read a witness statement one line at a time, then choose whether to press for more detail or present evidence that exposes a contradiction. Incorrect accusations reduce the judge’s patience meter, so a strong case requires paying attention to the wording of testimony as well as to dates, injuries, objects, and relationships established during the investigation. That cycle of discovery, deduction, and rebuttal gives the game its distinctive rhythm despite its visual-novel presentation.

A major addition is the Psyche-Lock system. When a person is concealing an important subject, Phoenix can use Maya Fey’s magatama to reveal symbolic locks around it. Breaking them requires presenting the evidence or character profile that challenges the secret, bringing the courtroom-style logic of the series into investigations. Phoenix is again aided by spirit medium Maya, while young Pearl Fey and rival prosecutor Franziska von Karma join the returning cast. The cases move from a spirit-channeling incident and a police murder charge to a circus mystery and a high-stakes final trial.

The Nintendo DS version retains the hand-drawn character portraits, expressive reaction shots, music cues, and menu-based interface that define the early Ace Attorney games. Its English localization places Phoenix and the familiar court cast in a stylized American setting while preserving the series’ unusual legal proceedings and the Fey clan’s Japanese spiritual traditions. Unlike the preceding DS release, this installment does not add the first game’s DS-specific forensic examination sequences; its new mechanical focus is the Psyche-Lock interrogation feature.

Justice for All continues the story after Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and leads into Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations, making it a central chapter of the original Phoenix Wright trilogy. Its cases develop Phoenix’s working partnership with Maya and challenge his ideals about defending a client when the truth becomes morally complicated. The game later appeared in collections and rereleases with the other original trilogy titles, but the Nintendo DS edition remains the version that introduced this sequel to English-speaking handheld players.
