About

Dino Crisis arrived on Dreamcast in 2000 as a port of Capcom's 1999 "panic horror" adventure. Capcom published the release, while Nextech handled the Dreamcast conversion. The game retains the original's real-time 3D environments and fixed cinematic camera angles, placing its dinosaur threat in the close quarters of a scientific complex rather than in an open prehistoric wilderness.

The story takes place in 2009, when the Secret Operation Raid Team sends agent Regina and her partners Gail, Rick, and Cooper to Ibis Island. Their target is Dr. Edward Kirk, a scientist presumed dead who is secretly working on a weapons project. The mission unravels after the team finds the isolated facility devastated and discovers that dinosaurs now roam its corridors.

Regina explores offices, laboratories, control rooms, and service areas while piecing together the cause of the outbreak. Kirk's Third Energy research has created a spacetime distortion that exchanges part of the island with the past, bringing prehistoric creatures into the present. The investigation becomes a race to find the scientist, restore communications, and escape before the situation consumes the entire facility.

Its survival-horror structure mixes navigation, combat, and environmental problem-solving. Regina carries firearms and limited ammunition and medical supplies, can combine certain items into tools such as anesthetic darts, and uses color-coded emergency boxes for storage. Velociraptors can pursue her through connected rooms, knock a weapon from her hands, and inflict bleeding injuries that require a hemostat as well as healing.

Progress often hinges on maps, keys, and the D.D.K. system, which pairs code and input discs to unlock secured doors. Players can also activate laser barriers to obstruct intruders, while fixed views and tank-style directional controls keep danger just beyond the frame. Several mid- and late-game decisions send Regina along different routes and alter the fates of the team, leading to multiple escape outcomes involving Kirk and the Tyrannosaurus rex.

The Dreamcast edition is largely the same game in content and level design as the PlayStation release, with no new rooms or gameplay systems. Its principal changes are technical and presentational: clearer textures, reduced texture distortion and jaggedness, native 640-by-480 output, higher-quality audio, and a revised menu and controller-specific HUD. It therefore offers the original adventure in a cleaner Dreamcast presentation rather than a redesigned version.
